Cocktail of the Week: Bowie’s In SpaceBy Stephanie Moreno
This January 8th marks what would have been the 70th birthday of the late great David Bowie. The news of his passing sent shockwaves throughout the world which are still being felt. Though we all miss him terribly, he has, and will continue to, inspire us all. One silver lining is that he left us with his music (with possibly even more to come) and his films to continue to enjoy.
‘Bowie’s In Space’ is a cocktail you can find at Fool’s Gold in Manhattan. Created by Matt Friedlander, current General Manager at Sweetwater Social also in Manhattan, its name was inspired from a song written by Flight of the Conchords. If you haven’t heard/seen their video from their HBO show, please seek it out. Their homage to their hero is worth a listen/view.
MAKING THE BOWIE’S IN SPACE COCKTAIL
“Most of my cocktails are ingredient or spirit driven – meaning I’ll taste some new brand or some new flavor and get inspired and immediately start working. Atlantico Reserva rum was brought to my attention and I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve always been a fan of aged rum, but I wanted to do something a bit more accessible and leaning towards a tropical note.” says Friedlander.
“The first pass I took at the cocktail tasted *exactly* like TANG. We were debating rolling with similar flavor profiles but tweaking it a bit and naming it something to do with astronauts. [Since many] associate TANG with space travel…that was where I left the drink at for the time being.”
“Later that night, Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords visited Fool’s Gold with a couple of friends. Their [lyric] “Bowie’s In Space” popped in my head, and the cocktail was thus named.”
