While Ireland is better known for its blended whiskeys, there are plenty of Irish single malts worth a closer look (or how 'bout a sip or two). Here are a few of our favorites!

    This is a sourced whiskey bottled by Niche drinks while the brand builds its own distillery in Derry, Northern Ireland. The single malt has been aged 8 years in former bourbon casks, then transferred to newer, first-fill bourbon casks for finishing. Available in the US as of early 2016.

    The Irishman is one of the brands in the Walsh Whiskey portfolio which was founded in 1999 by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh. The 12 year-old single malt was first released in 2012 and is released annually in 6000 bottle batches. It's triple distilled and aged exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels.

    Blackpitts is the first Dublin-distilled peated single malt and just the second release for Teeling to be distilled at their newly-opened distillery. The name refers to the Blackpitts area just behind the distillery which used to be used for malting among other industries. The single malt is triple distilled and matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Sauternes white wine barrels. It is bottled without chill-filtration at 46% ABV. Available in Ireland and the distillery as of October 2020 and the US in January 2021.

    A US limited release beginning Fall 2016, this is a triple-distilled single malt expression from Tullamore D.E.W. This Irish whiskey has aged 14 years and was finished in four different types of casks: bourbon, oloroso sherry, port, and madeira casks. Bottled at 41.3% ABV.

    Launched in early 2022, Bushmills 12 Year is a permanent addition to the brand's portfolio. It is a marriage of two single malts — one aged in oloroso sherry butts and the other in ex-bourbon barrels — each aged over 11 years. Then after they are married, the single malt is finished in Marsala wine casks for another 6-9 months to finish maturation. The whiskey is made from 100% unmalted barley and was triple-distilled in copper pot stills. This new release also launches new packaging for each of the single malts in the portfolio. (SRP $59.99)

    Launched in March 2017 is this limited edition single malt Irish whiskey made at the Cooley Distillery in County Louth, and part of the Jim Beam portfolio. Beginning with Irish barley, it is double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills and aged for at least 16 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks. Using Irish spring water, Tyrconnell 16 Year Single Malt is proofed to 46% ABV.
