Ketel One Vodka
Unflavored Vodka — NetherlandsTasted January 15, 2021A solid vodka and a favorite of mine in college, though I prefer Chopin now for sipping neat. It has a good amount of wheat taste up front and a fair amount of ethanol taste on the back end. Definitely stronger flavors than Grey Goose.
Smirnoff Peppermint Twist
Flavored Vodka — USATasted December 6, 2020Exactly what you would expect and want from a peppermint schnapps. Intense peppermint flavor without being cloyingly sweet. Not so peppermint you that you feel like you’ve brushed your teeth, and alcohol burn does not linger too long. Perfect for the holidays.
Unflavored Vodka — Texas, USATasted December 2, 2020As far as neutral vodkas go, this one is all right. I like it better than Grey Goose, which I think has hardly any taste at all. Tito’s has practically nothing on the nose but at least has a little Pepperiness to it. Well priced, but I would go with something with more character like Kettle One or Chopin’s if I were drinking it neat.
SKYY Vodka (Discontinued)
Unflavored Vodka — USATasted November 23, 2020Certainly a value brand vodka, but I think deserves more credit than as a strict mixer. It’s got an oily palate up front and a peppery finish, but there is a lot of ethanol burn in between. Not undrinkable neat, but not my first choice, either. Works great in a Bloody Mary.
Grey Goose Vodka
Unflavored Vodka — FranceTasted November 22, 2020It’s not bad, but it strikes me as vodka for people that don’t actually like the taste of vodka. It is too clean and smooth and drinkable to a fault for me. I much prefer a vodka with a little more burn and some more peppery flavor.
Knob Creek Smoked Maple
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted November 13, 2020Not as sweet as I thought it would be based on other reviews. This works fine neat for me. Lots of maple flavor and a little smoke to Knob Creek’s typical profile. Definitely fills a different craving than your standard bourbon, but not so sweet that I would use it as a liqueur.
Chila 'Orchata Cinnamon Cream Rum
Dairy/Egg Liqueurs — USATasted November 7, 2020This is a superior cream-based liqueur to Bailey’s. You can definite taste the cinnamon (which is not overpowering), but just as prominent are the vanilla and nutmeg flavors. This is fine by itself, but it is begging to be used in a dessert drink like a Brandy Alexander or a Mudslide or a Eggnog. Enjoy it over the holidays!
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted October 20, 2020An interesting take on a wheated bourbon like its rival Maker’s Mark (one of my favorites). I love the strong caramel notes on the nose and it has solid sweet corn finish, but it’s not very complex in between on the palate. Yes, it’s very sippable and it has a nice medium burn, but it’s lacking on the oaky and spicy notes.
Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USATasted October 17, 2020The toffee and the cinnamon definitely come through strong on this one, though I did not get much of a woody flavor. Solid choice to sip neat without too much ethanol burn.
Fruit Liqueurs — FranceTasted October 17, 2020By itself, it definitely tastes like the filling of a raspberry truffle. Love it with champagne as a variation on a kir royale or in place of sweet vermouth in a Manhattan.
