GlenDronach Revival 15 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2016 (edited March 11, 2017)Had this before and with some BBQ (best I've had, and cheap half price ribs Friday nights) at Old Faithful before Bayside gig. Packed but good atmosphere with friendly staff knocking back shots and mucking about. We sat at the bar watching little orange fish get sliced for cocktails. Saw this one and had to try it seeing as though I'd been looking for a bottle with no luck (temporarily unavailable for a year or two). This was one of the best whiskies I've tasted, easily. Smells good, tastes better. A fair few seem to be the other way round. It's sweet but not like some others where it seems to be just from honey, toffee etc. Rich fruit caramelised with brown sugar. Good sweet pastries with toasty edges. Longish finish is delicious with slight pepper and mellow spices. So good! Must buy when it comes back around. Ordered a rocked High West Campfire to finish after this which was good, but should have had another of these. Both were cheap too. Some units next to us started getting rowdy shouting "RIBS!" And then tried to start something arguing with the bar staff just before we left for the gig. All quite good entertainment. Bayside sounded mint, top night -
Starward Malt Whisky
Single Malt — Victoria, Australia
Reviewed November 3, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)BBQ and drinks catch up with Mike, Tim & Ross home from New York for a bit. Almost tricked Tim into eating a 'mint' which was really a pre-dunked not yet moist towelette but Ross stuffed it. Had an alright selection at Clarence's, I went for this. Felt harsh very initially on swallow but softened real quick. Kind of like all the taste comes at once, but good full flavour. I got vanilla, sultanas and pastries. Medium finish. Was good, but maybe not too many dimensions to it. Pushing 3 -
Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 30, 2016 (edited November 10, 2016)The Dog lent me a taste. I accidentally sent him a text with hugs and kisses meant for CC haha creepin. Watching new Bulls who look like a much better scoring team beat up on the Pacers. Fruity with raisins, orange peel and some spice. Finish was short medium from memory. Enjoyed much. Above 3 for sure, good stuff -
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 28, 2016 (edited November 11, 2016)Crowd pleaser methinks, great choice to offer those getting into whisky. Can't taste bad. Bought a bottle early days and will do at some stage again. Easy down, one of the few that I don't find noticeably benefits from a small splash of water. Honey, raisins, a little spice as afters, mediumish finish. Not overly complex but really decent and good value -
Laphroaig 10 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 26, 2016 (edited November 15, 2016)It's peaty and salty but a bit short on the finish for me, for any other flavours besides the smoke. I don't get much coming through in the background. Pretty good and enjoyable still, but very much prefer an Ardbeg 10. Mid 2's and up -
High West Campfire (Discontinued)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in Utah), Multiple Countries
Reviewed October 26, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)Smoky, spicy, bit sweet. Great finish that is sweeter than the taste going down. Had it at Varnish on King after a job interview that may or may not have gone boobs up. Closer to a 3 than a 2. Enjoyed it -
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 15, 2016 (edited October 30, 2016)At Samson's Paddock with cheese and dessert. This was very good. Tiny burn up front which quickly disappears then sweet dried fruits, sherry and a little spice, nice medium finish. Probably the sweetest thing I've tried to date. CC said it was syrupy and tasted like Christmas! Good call, was Christmas Cakey for sure. She also told me to buy a bottle, which was decent advice
