Macallan Double Cask 12 Year
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed October 4, 2019 (edited September 3, 2021)Second taste edit: I still get plenty of oak spice, and the sherry comes through with a rich red fruit midpalate. It has a moderate finish with baking spice and cherry. I’m having it right next to the Sherry Oak Cask and I prefer the barley and oak featured in this one. Mostly vanilla on the palate. It’s light, but not thin. Slightly herbal nose. I can definitely tell it’s double oaked because of the oak spice and vanilla. Enjoyable scotch. -
Glenmorangie Duthac
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 4, 2019 (edited December 1, 2019)It’s bold and full. You can tell it’s sherried but the virgin oak adds some girth to it. I love the complexity in this guy. The nose has some fruit and orange, along with a little copper. The palate is the perfect balance of fruit and oak. A little chocolate too. It’s a complex scotch that I’d like to have in my cabinet. -
This tastes very similar to the 12 yr. Creamy, sherry, butterscotch. It’s got a little more chocolate than the 12, and it’s slightly smoother. As i drink it, it gets fuller, but it’s not super rich. Still has a tinge if sulphur like the 12. Glad I got to try it, because it’s enjoyable, but not near worth the $140 price point.

Edit: Having this on the rocks on vacation has transformed my perception of this guy. Stands up well to the ice, imparts richness and spice that I don’t remember getting when I first tried it. Bumping it up. Basic bourbon flavors. Vanilla, oak, caramel, ethanol. It’s relatively full for the most part.

Edit: I keep thinking about the rich brown sugar in this guy and wishing it was more forward in other bourbons. Bumping him up. The nose is sweet and smooth. Can’t tell that it’s over 50%. Lots of brown sugar, oak and nuttiness. On the palate, spice cake and brown sugar, plus some cocoa powder and coffee grounds. Extremely smooth bourbon for how big it is. I love the flavor profile of this.

Cragganmore 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 2, 2019 (edited January 12, 2020)It’s good, it’s thin. I’m glad I had it. On the nose, well water and citrus. It tasted better than it smelled. Fresh palate, but thin. Lemon and butterscotch.
