Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 5, 2017 (edited November 16, 2017)It's good, don't get me wrong. It's the spiciness in the beginning that throws me, though it does give way to a rich, fruity initial taste before dissolving into that vanilla/caramel creaminess near the end. The overwhelming spice is more than I'd prefer, though. I guess as a relative newbie I still prefer sweet and smooth to complex and spicy, but I likes what I likes. That said, for the price ($27) it'll cure what ails ya and is still a tasty one overall. -
The best way I can describe this is smelling a campfire and drinking ocean water. Both of these are good things, though. The ocean taste is subtle but helps break through the smoky nose, and it finishes smooth after an initial kick of smoky/peaty goodness. I thought Laphroaig was my standard-bearer among the smoky peat moss set, but this one earned its place near the top!

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 4, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)It's good. Definitely complex with a sweeter nose than most. Not overpowering but rather like the smell of a kitchen after baking a spice cake. Deep, rich toffee and cinnamon mouth feel gives way to a citrus and spice finish. It's good but not my favorite. -
The professional tasting note on this one hits it on the head. It works on a few levels, starting with the bite of cinnamon and oak at the beginning, smoothing out to a sweet vanilla cake-like flavor on the palate. The finish is superb, with a slight oak/cinnamon burn giving way to a coconut/almond/vanilla finish that lasts pleasantly longer than you'd expect. It's a good one. Much like its 10-year brethren, it's a must-have if you like a complex, sweet bourbon.

Baker's Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 28, 2017 (edited August 8, 2019)Is it possible to be spicy and smooth at the same time? This one pulls it off, and finishes strong with a cinnamon/vanilla mix which is not too overpowering. That it achieves a spicy edge while maintaining a full-bodied, oily feel on the palate just makes this bottle the total package. It earns a well-deserved spot on my top shelf. -
Definitely a go-to bourbon, quite different from the fruity, floral, spicy bourbons I've tried. Thick on the palate, my first inclination was that I was drinking vanilla cake. Heavy on the baking spices (nutmeg, vanilla, etc.), this one is sweet but not overpoweringly sweet, if that makes sense. Minimal burn until the end, so this definitely fits in the pantheon of "smooth" bourbons. From a texture perspective it's definitely got a unique mouth feel, with the oily consistency standing out more than most of its contemporaries that I've tried. This belongs on my shelf always. A nice change of pace from my typical bourbon favorites.

Belle Meade Single Barrel Bourbon 10 Year
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed October 28, 2017 (edited May 1, 2018)So good. Not only is it a syrupy sweet vanilla/caramel masterpiece, but it's also a veritable cornucopia of fruits, from cherry to apple and maybe even a hint of plum. Solid spicy undertones and some chocolate help create a complex taste. Usually it's hard to justify bourbon at such a high price point ($66 for this bottle) but the complexity and deliciousness justifies the cost. Well worth it if you can get your hands on it.
