Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 8, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)It's a decent sweet bourbon. Gets high marks for being priced fairly low ($25 bottle) yet still being smooth and delicious. I noted the banana bread taste but most felt the vanilla/cream sweetness until the slightly spicy burn at the finish. I've been very happy with Heaven Hills' offerings and this is no different. Worth grabbing if you like a sweeter bourbon. -
Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed September 30, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)This is a solid rye, much sweeter than I would have expected. In fact, the first taste was like a syrup/vanilla bomb before the rye spice kicked in. Not a terrifically harsh finish but definitely gets spicier toward the end. Smooth and tasty, I give it 4 stars only because the price point is much higher than I'd prefer for what I'm getting. Definitely worth getting a bottle to have on hand but not one worth sipping daily. -
Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 23, 2017 (edited March 14, 2018)It starts sweet then kicks you in the teeth with a spicy, hot finish. This isn't an every-day sipper like a Bulleit or Evan Williams (my favorites at the $25-$30 price point) but it cures what ails ya if you're in the mood for a couple of different flavor profiles in a single pour. Whatever points this loses for its potent finish it gains back for being reasonably complex for its price point. A solid 3.5-4 stars. -
Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 20, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Smooth and sweet. Not much burn, so it's an easy sipper; almost too sweet with the vanilla and caramel. Still, a solid bourbon, though there are comparable bottles for a lower price point (paid $49 for this one). -
Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 25, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)I still prefer the original Bulleit as my "daily sipper" of choice, but this is a decent bottle in its own right. Not as good as its high-proof bretheren that I've tasted (Maker's Mark Cask Strength and Booker's come to mind), I still appreciate the tastes that make Bulleit's brands among my early bourbon favorites. The sweet, marshmallowy caramel taste gives way to a smooth, spicy burn, and the fruit tastes at the end linger nicely. It's a solid pickup when I'm in the Kentucky area. -
Westland American Oak American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Washington , USA
Reviewed August 25, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Not quite Scotch, not quite bourbon, yet still possessing notes of each. On second tasting (first tasting ruined by caramel ice cream just prior to tasting) I definitely got a rich sweetness mixed with a woody, pine-tree-like taste. Chocolate, caramel, pepper and definite hints of tobacco and wood, this is not a top-shelf whiskey for me but still a decent treat. -
Henry McKenna 10 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 25, 2017 (edited October 20, 2017)This is a solid bourbon. Like many others noted, it's ridiculously smooth for a 100-proof bourbon but definitely complex from start to finish. The finish lasts longer than many others I've tried, and that's a good thing. It's savory, spicy with a creamy, rich texture. I've been impressed with my first drams of Heaven Hill's whiskeys and this is another solid effort from this distillery. -
Belle Meade Bourbon Madeira Cask Finish
Bourbon — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 22, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Solid, if you want a sweeter, vanilla-rich bourbon. Some rye kick, which I like, but smoother and sweeter than a typical rye. I need to try the much-beloved 9-year cask Belle Meade to see the difference but so far this is a great first taste from this brand of bourbon, and one of my early favorites. -
Evan Williams Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 22, 2017 (edited November 2, 2017)One of the most complex bourbons I've tasted in my relatively short time tasting bourbons. Starts strong but smooth, some spice and sweetness with a fruity undertone. The finish is fantastic, rich, oily and strong spice/caramel kick - all while not being too overpowering. Very tasty!
