Peerless Kentucky Straight Rye (24 Months)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 9, 2018 (edited May 7, 2018)Compliments on the bottle design to Carson Taylor and the gang. Thoughts: Like Willett Rye on steroids, it viscous, and has the same green tea nose- with similar, but bigger and deeper sugary notes in the body. Worth the price. Very very good for 2 years. -
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed February 8, 2018 (edited March 25, 2018)In a world of $700 2nd market prices for Btac and $150 retail rye - I shake my head and think - there must be a simpler more available solution? I turn to barrel proof whisky search for similar uniqueness, complexity and all preferably for a fraction of the cost. Enter: Jack Daniels single barrel, barrel proof Reality check: Most big name companies don’t make such a readily available release of their flagship product at barrel proof; so kudos to Brown Forman and I feel privileged to be given a chance to try JD in its purest form. Nose: banana bread, pancake syrup, wet hay, freshly cut grass, rubbing alcohol. Palate: sugar babies, shredded wheat, oak, Mexican vanilla. Finish: DRY, DRY, DRY... did I mention it’s dry? Super thick mouth feel, coats your mouth, long lasting. This is an interesting addition to our collections considering most of y’alls gateway drug into the bourbon world was probably heavily influenced by Jack.... - this is the no bullshit version- and at $65 the price is extremely fair. I like it, it’s unique and stands on its own in its own category. -
Blanton's Gold Edition
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 4, 2018 (edited September 23, 2022)January 2017 - I'm in San Francisco, my calfs burning from the dizzying hills that plague this town, I can clearly see why Uber was invented here first. I hear a 2BD apt in this town still gets you a roommate on a 100k salary - but WOW! what a beautiful metropolis! I can see the drippings and chiselings of the cities rich culture on every street corner. I'm here on business making yet another super hero film for the biggest of big screens- we have one week left in principle photography - and as usual I'm hog tied to the production day and night - excited to wrap this one; I havent been off a production in over 3 years. Sounds exciting eh? Well yes- I'm lucky to be involved with such a great team; however after 12 hour days 6 days a week - not even a naked cocain ridden cheerleader pool party in Fiji would be fun anymore.. maybe. . Anyway - its a cool and beautiful night in SF, myself and a senior member of the crew decided to hit the bar down from our hotel called "The Saratoga" - it's a fancy place, well dressed staff, dimly lit, I'd imagine patrons utilize this place for impressing dates with sophistication and priciness- people are dressed in button-downs, scarves and fine leather - and there we were... in hoodies, winter caps and dickies work pants- a class act we were not... but even the highest of formalities won't stop these whiskey crusaders - On the menu I see BLANTON'S GOLD - I know this bottle to be imported.. not imported like your corner store Tecate - but imported like Afghani Opium - thanks to the genius ---AMERICANS--- over at buffalo trace sending the good stuff from KENTUCKY overseas, and then forcing fans to basically smuggle it back one by one- its hard to find and expensive here in the US (thumbs down). Nose: complex and fruity, citrus, vanilla. Palate: Bold toffee, carmel, berries, maple syrup, grenadien, oak, spice. Finish: Rich, thick, it coats your mouth and leave you wanting more. its an experience like non-other. I was totally caught off gard on this one as I feel its significantly better than the standard Blanton's. We wrapped up at over $600 and 8 drinks between the two of us, stumbling jovialy to exit the nice "first date" bar. I recall that this was one of the best bourbons I'v ever tasted - -
Eagle Rare 17 Year Bourbon (Fall 2013)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 4, 2018 (edited December 3, 2019)—ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE EAGLE RARE 10— just for the record. This reminds me of more of Thomas handy, but a little dryer. It’s complex and soothing- Nose: campfire s’mores, roasted chestnuts palate: subtle dry vanilla berry unsweetened dark chocolate, hazelnut. Finish: dry, light oaky Carmel. It’s pretty good but I wouldn’t bend over backwards to acquire a bottle. -
