Highland Park 18 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 29, 2019 (edited August 16, 2019)Nose- Sweet smoke. Two sides of the spectrum mingle here as one balanced nose. Body- Smoke and sweet pit fruit. This then moves to a black pepper spice on the edges of your tongue. Finish- black pepper, smoke, and a light floral earthy pink linger with a medium to long finish. Notes- I have been hitting the bourbons hard lately but a few of my sipper bottles are getting some age on them so it’s time to finish them off. Tough life. -
Nose- Lots of sweet vanilla and doughy bread notes. Body- This is a fairly simple pour but overall it is sweet and soft with vanilla, honeysuckle and sugar cookies. Finish- Vanilla continues giving way to a bit of mint. There is a bitter oakiness in the finish that takes away from the soft mid palate. While unremarkable. This is a nice bourbon all around. The relatively low Distiller ranking surprised me.

Old Tub Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 17, 2019 (edited August 19, 2020)Thesis Statement- (I’m going to start choosing one phrase to summarize a bourbon)- orange marmalade Nose- brown sugar and sweet tea with a hint of astringency Body- Sweet with cinnamon and black pepper give way to orange marmalade and a hint of ginger. Finish- The orange marmalade hangs there with some brown sugar as well. This thing is sweet! I really like this. It is an easy drink at 100 proof and has a strong citrus note. I’ll pick up some more next year when I visit God’s country. -
Nose- Astrjngent with notes of syrupy sweetness like molasses. Body- Molasses and wet cardboard continue. Finish- Wet paper really comes out here. Note- This is a one trick pony (get it?), but it isn’t horrible. It’s mostly pleasant to drink and although really simple and flat, it’s okay for a rye aged for a “minimum or six months.”

Willett Family Estate Bottled Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 14, 2019 (edited March 12, 2020)Nose- Cherry! Sweet and a bit sour. Remind me of the rev cherry syrup for snow cones. Body- Good lord! This is a cherry bomb and I love it. There is a nice presence of black sugar and a peppery spice as well. Finish- Cherry, tobacco, and sweet tea continue. This one really costs the mouth with a reach tannin mouthfeel with just a hint of mint. Note- I loved this! It was rich and easy enough to drink straight although it really opened up with a few drops of water. This was a six year old barrel puck chosen by the Silver Dollar Houston Bourbon Consortium.
