This is much more straightforward like good tequila with some good age and some good wood. The wood comes through a little more clear, both on the nose and on the pallet. Little bit more of an alcohol burn here compared to tapatio. Less green flavors and more subtle hints of vanilla and caramel. This is kind of reminding me of tequila and bourbon. And that's not a bad thing.

There's something Dusty on the nose here. On the pallet is that typical agave sweetness, and for me there's like a corny kind of quality. There's also some green vegetable notes. Maybe almost something like roasted broccoli. And then the tail end is definitely like a Dusty pepper note with that wood coming through

Montelobos Espadín Mezcal Joven
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed April 2, 2022 (edited June 28, 2022)Wow. The nose is enticing, with sweet agave, grassy green vegetal notes, and a light smokiness. The palette is mildly sweet, with a savory middle, and that green pepper, smokey tail end reminiscent of poblano. This stuff is ridiculously easy to drink neat. It's also really nice on the rocks. Have yet to try it in cocktails, but I'm sure this would make a mean mezcalita -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 27, 2022 (edited August 5, 2022)Really good. Brown butter, soft leather, and sweet pipe tobacco. Maybe some dark fruits… dried figs and prunes. And a nuttiness that for some reason my brain keeps wanting to label as “dried leaves”. -

Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed March 26, 2022 (edited March 27, 2022)Sweet, maybe too sweet. But full of brown sugar, baked apple, and baking spices and unreasonably smooth on the finish. There's a lingering finish of spicy rye, but mellowed by all the sweetness. Dangerous at 100 proof, as one might be able to throw this back without knowing -
This is, I think, my first time trying a proper peated scotch. The nose caught me first. At first, I thought maybe I’d wasted a bunch of money on this bottle. It was intense, reminding me of some challenging smoked lagers from Germany that I’ve been known to enjoy, but only if I’m truly in the mood for it. The smokiness was expected, but perhaps not so much the depth and complexity of the rest of the flavor profile. Salty brine, a strong umami-like presence, and I guess that “medicinal” quality I’ve seen mentioned. I don’t get bandaid outright, although I’m familiar with the flavor from trying dirty Spanish-style ciders and funky beers, but it could be too integrated for me to pick it out individually on first taste. But there is a lot going on here and it is strangely addictive. My initial response was one of intrigue and skepticism, but I kept coming back again and again, for “just one more sip” only to uncover more. Can’t yet place this properly on the spectrum of competitors in the same style, but for now this ranks as one of the most interesting things I’ve tried and might be a milestone moment for me in my spirit journey

Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt
Blended Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 24, 2022 (edited May 23, 2022)Get this monkey off my shoulder! I keep trying to chase it away, but when I let down my guard, it’s back. What was that about orange marmalade and warm honey on toast? That’s pretty spot on, actually. Although, I find it more orange-blossomy and fresh, than jammy. I get a bit of maple in there, also. And the finish isn’t quite long, but it is quite round, filling my pallet with a really rich evolution of all the flavors in the mid-pallet. The final note is always pleasant mic drop of creme brûlée (on the light side) and orange blossoms. At this price point, I could see this being a go-to. I wouldn’t call it a value pick, since from what I can tell that tends to suggest the best cheap stuff one can buy. This is more like the cheapest best stuff. I’ll probably keep this on my short list of things to keep on my shelves at all times. This monkey may be on my shoulder for some time…43.99 USD per Bottle -
Tanqueray London Dry Gin (47.3%)
London Dry Gin — Scotland
Reviewed March 22, 2022 (edited September 24, 2022)Compared to Beefeater, this is almost subdued in terms of Juniper, but not in overall flavor. The Juniper is still strong, but just not as much of a standout, with the citrus in particular getting a much bigger role. It’s not so much that the former is single note, as to say that here there’s more of a balance between the players, with the juniper omnipresent, but so well integrated into the backdrop it is hard to tell where all those other flavors and aromas begin and end.
