Yesterday we got sweet Rum and Bourbon, today I'll try an Islay. Got this just because the local discout market had it. It sounded good so I bought a bottle. It did not disappoint. The smell is peat, vanilla and bacon. On the taste I get sweet peat, salty pork and general meat flavors. Think honey glazed smoked bacon. Kinda reminds me of a dialed down Laphroaig. I like it. The aftertaste is rather short, but not bad. Sweet, smoky. A Nice 30 bucks bottle of whisky.

Willett Pot Still Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 7, 2017 (edited October 9, 2017)My last miniature, need to stock up again. On the nose you get a lot of barrelnotes, oak, char, some vanilla and cinnamon. Quite pleasent. The taste is very sweet and spicy, with a ton of vanilla and hints of cinnamon-apples. The aftertaste gets slightly bitter with some sweet vanilla. Good bourbon, cool bottle, not sure about the price though. -
Chairman's Reserve The Forgotten Casks Rum
Aged Rum — Saint Lucia
Reviewed October 7, 2017 (edited October 22, 2020)We continues our Rum and Music evening with this gem. (Song at the Moment: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird....still the best damn rock solo ever). This juice has high ratings...and I can see why. On the nose we get very strong caramel, slight vanilla, something that reminds me more of fresh ripe plums than it does of raisins, and a light smell of bourbon. The taste is moderatly sweet, honey, plums, oak, cigars, cherry pipe tobacco, and almost peaty and smoky in flavor (though very faint, probably the barrel). It has a medium afterthaste of honey tobacco. This might be a strong contender for best Rum I had so far, definatly an alternative to the Botucal, and not that much more expensive. 9/10, will buy a bottle. -
Cacique Ron Extra Añejo 500 Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed October 7, 2017 (edited October 9, 2017)Today I'm going to do 2 Rums, this is the first one. And we are off to a good start. On the nose I get brown sugar, plums and raisins. The taste keeps the brown sugar note, together with salt, strong bitter coffee, vanilla, oak and a hint of caramel. Aftertaste is long and bittersweet. Really nice Rum. Perfect for an evening of listening to songs from my teens (currently playing: Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine Overdose....yeah I was into Black Metal and Gothic back in the day^^). Good start in the evening so far. Next one is coming in about an hour or so. -
Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt
Blended Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 5, 2017 (edited December 14, 2017)I like this stuff a lot. And I'm glad I do, needed a good whisky after todays medical torture. (Granted, the fear was worse than the actual procedure^^). On the nose I get oranges, honey, butter and some slight herbal notes. Taste is just amazing for the pricepoint. A dose of malt on the front, followed by honey, bitter herbes, some pepper, mint and freshly toasted full grain toast. Aftertaste turns into dark chocolate and mint. Like after eight but a hell of a lot less sweet. I like that I can get this at the "local" super market for 32 bucks. They do have a decent selection but are usually expensive as hell (Lagavulin 16 is usually around 50, they want over 70 for it). I can get a bottle of this online for 23 bucks, but after shipping I'm still at around 30, so that's the price I'm going with. If someone told me this is a 60€+ bottle, I'd buy it. It's good, it's friendly, not boring at all. Great everyday blend. It's a beloved bang for the buck whisky for a reason. -
Number 3 today. On the smell it's actually my least favorite of the 3, but damn the taste makes up for that. Smell is bandaids, apples and salt. Took me a while to get anything at all, so not really impressed, although the apple note is rather strong. Taste is complety different. Peat, pears, salt and cereals, all in a smooth as hell combination that is just delicious. It has similarities to the Storm, but it feels more compact, the notes blend together a bit better. Not the strongest peat note I had, but it is noticable and rather pleasent. Aftertaste is peat and salt with a bit of sweetness. Yeah, after comparing the three, the ratings are fair. Skye, Storm and 10 Year are all 3 good whiskys, but the 10 Year takes the cake and gets the 5 star rating from me. It's not going in my top shelf yet, but it is very close. Prices on the 3 are about the same (Master of Malt prices), so if you want to spend 40 bucks on a good bottle of moderatly peated whisky, get the 10 year.

The second Talisker for the evening. On the nose, the first thing I noticed is that the alcohol burn is a lot stronger than on the Skye despite having the same ABV. After that you get a bit of peat, combined with pears and orange. On the taste it heavily reminds me of honey cereals and sweet malt combined with pepper and smoke. The aftertaste is honey, pepper and salt. All in all, while I liked the Skye, I prefer this one over it. But yeah, as many have stated, the name is not fitting, this is far from a storm, rather a rainy night in the city. Enjoyable, if you are in the mood for it. Now on the the 10 year old...but first I'm gonna enjoy what I have left of the storm in my glas (yeah I'm writing these while tasting so maybe some sentenced don't make all that much sense).

Decided to do a 3 part tasting today with Skye, Storm and the 10 Year old, from the lowest to highest rating on Distiller. Starting with the Skye, on the nose you get a strong note of caramel, some smoke, and a hint of salt(water). Taste is caramel with moderate sweetness, some smoke, salt and a surprisingly strong bitter chocolate note. The strongest note in the aftertaste for me is salted caramel, sweet and sour. If THIS has the lowest rating of the 3 Taliskers I'm in for a good evening, because I really like this juice. Not a 5 star dram, but a bloody good effort. I'd say the 85 is deserved (everything above 80 is pretty much good anyway, so now we are comparing stuff on a higher level). It's a bit more expensive than the 10 year old, but we are still in the sub 40€ zone. Worth buying in my opinion.

Poit Dhubh Blended Malt 21 Year
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed September 26, 2017 (edited October 31, 2019)On the nose it's heavy with cherry, some vanilla and chocolate. No surprise on the taste, same as the nose plus a bit of peat/smoke. I also get a very similar aftertaste to Lagavulin 16, just not as strong. I still haven't figured out what it reminds me of, but I love this aftertaste. This, combined with the fact that the peat note is turned down quite a bit makes this whisky far more enjoyable for me. It still isn't a "reading a book and sipping" whisky, but for exploring a complex dram this works rather well. The price is also rather low for a 21 year old whisky, so if you can get it, definatly try it. -
Once a favorite of mine, but after tasting a few more rums, it's not that high up anymore. Nose is heavy on orange and marzipan. Faint Almonds. Taste is orange, vanilla and a hint of chocolate. Rather sweet but not too sweet. Finish is almost non existant. Granted, I had this bottle for while, but the taste didn't really change. Still a good rum every now and then, and awesome in desserts (try milk rice with a dash of this stuff, it's great). Not a bad Rum, but for sipping there are better out there.
