Rosebank 12 Year Flora & Fauna
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 2, 2020 (edited July 3, 2020)Lovely light flavours. Grass like vanilla. Nothing special but nice to taste a slice of history 3.5 -
After a weak Balvenie line up i was hoping for a decent dram and this delivered. I had heard good things about this bottler and this 27 year effort is a good one. Even at 45% water opens up nicely. Spice, rich creamy sherry and lovely warming aftertaste. An overly drying finish takes it down a notch however all in all a nice job

Carsebridge 40 Year Old 1976 XOP
Single Grain — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 30, 2020 (edited June 15, 2020)A year before I was born this was laid down to rest. As I get older drinking this type of whiskey, one which was created before I was is getting rarer and rarer. Age as they say is just a number as is the generalizing that all grain whiskey is crap. Often with stereotypes there is a grain of truth (excuse the pun!) however and this is one of those that goes with rather than against the grain so to speak (boyaaah.. double pun!). They have tried to do a decent job but it really is like trying to push a wagon of grain up hill (and the trifecta!). Nose and palate a bit gluey and acetone like. There is vanilla and a bit more going on but by in large pretty average. I've had quite a few others tonight which have bested this -
Pittyvaich 1989 25 Year (2015 Special Release)
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed May 29, 2020 (edited February 19, 2021)And counting down on my last few samples of closed distilleries. Rosebank, Port Dundas, Carsebridge, Glenesk and then that's all I can get my hands on at a not stupid price. I have seen a few more whole bottlings in the wild starting at $1000USD including Banff, Mosstowie but sadly the only few samples I've seen are stupidly expensive..generally$60 to $100USD even before you even add shipping taxes etc. There were still around 20 distilleries closed in the 1970's and the 1980's massacre i never got to try but c'est la vie I did have a crack at many others. Pittyvaich is one of those that isn't just a token effort. They've done a great job at representing this distillery. With water beautiful sweet perfectly balanced vanilla and honey. Aftertaste slightly bitter and short but still nice way to experience another ghost distillery offering. -
Caperdonich 21 year 1992 Cask 46220 - The Duncan Taylor Single
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed May 29, 2020 (edited June 25, 2020)Ah memories of the old days. Years ago when many on this site, @PBMichiganWolverine @Generously_Paul @LeeEvolved and others were making their way around Scotland tasting all the available distilleries. I tagged along remotely having ordered samples from every distillery. Now with my sample pile dwindling to ~ 20 i pulled out three remnants of that journey. And this was one. Very much a box ticking exercise and that is what it tasted like. Plain old simple refill fare. -
Cognac Leyrat XO Vielle Réserve
Cognac — Fins Bois, France
Reviewed May 29, 2020 (edited June 11, 2020)There are first world problems and then first world 1% problems. When you think ah not another cognac xo sample to try that's when you start to get a glimpse of the pain those poor 1%'s have to go though most days. I think after the one more cognac xo sample I have i'm taking a break from cognac for a while before I get cognac rsi/ous. Anyhow this is nice. I think with spirits these days it's a bit like the craft beer journey i went on for a decade or so. I drank stronger and more hoppier beers until I hit a triple hopped 13% beer one day, hit a wall and then started going backwards. These days beer wise i generally potter around base camp rather than the top of Mt Everest and for spirits i am enjoying more the lower abv drams around 46. Even 40% is sometimes nice. Flavor wise not a lot going on but nice wind down dram.
