Old Tub Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited August 28, 2020)Uncorking-Vanilla and spice on the nose. Lots of spice on the initial bite. You taste all of the 100 proof. More vanilla and a hint of oak char and varnish. Nothing standout but a very drinkable bourbon. Great mixer if you want a higher proof spice forward mix. I have others at this price point I would typically choose though to sip neat.26.0 USD per Bottle -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2019-03 "Country Ham"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 18, 2020 (edited August 19, 2020)Nose- peanuts and pecans. Deeper in you get a creamy coffee note like a cup you just finished. Like nothing I have smelled. So rich and instant peanut butter on initial bite. The proof spikes in hard. With pecan pie in a graham crust. Rich and typical vanilla but muted to the oak, spice and chocolate. Finishes with a sweet char like the burnt bits of a smoked ham. -
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 17, 2020 (edited September 2, 2020)Uncorking- Vanilla, oak and mint on the nose. taste - Very low burn for the proof. I usually only get mint like this on rye. Spicier mint like Speamint. Sweet, high vanilla, pops in the mouth. Then fresh cut oak and a hint of light char. Fun mouthfeel almost numbs my mouth but it's pleasant. The spikes you get are weirdly pleasant like wasabi or hotwings. This is a big jump up from the 101 for me which I also like. Finishes great with sweetness, more wood and vanilla undertones hanging out. I got the faintest bits of orange peel but not consistently. Water brought out the wood but maybe made it a touch bitter. I wouldn't want to diminish the proof spikes anyway. -
Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 16, 2020 (edited August 18, 2020)This is bourbon. A good one. Really traditional vanilla and caramel come through with baking spices on the nose but not a lot there. Clean sweet maple finish and oak finishing. Lots of flavor for a pretty reasonable price point.30.0 USD per Bottle -
Smokehead Islay Single Malt
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 16, 2020 (edited June 13, 2022)Nose is smoke over powering. Meaty, char and rubber. Initial taste was like the burnt bits on a grill. Then turned nice a half second later. Ultimately mellowing (sorta, this never really mellows, more like the way a Ferrari in grey is "understated") into a mild rubber and smoke oak and peat and almost like sesame oil, then with some seaweed snacks on the finish and rock salt. Some vanilla extract too. Never subtle. Weakness is these aren't just amped up great flavors. They are ok flavors spiked to 11. Think a good that just ok and amplify that flavor. It's not better. Just more. I'll need to be in the exact mood to do this one.60.0 USD per Bottle -
Stagg Jr Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch 1
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 14, 2020 (edited August 17, 2020)Color is gorgeous. Nose is caramel, vanilla and brown sugar. This has some richness right on the nose. Almost that clove punch and brown sugar, roasted figs with some smokiness. Plenty of that signature cherry in a thick syrup punch. Sweet with a depth. Then smooth on the finish. Little burn but pleasant. Really nice. -
David Nicholson Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky (bottled in Missouri), USA
Reviewed August 14, 2020Light but pleasant nose. Doesn't smell 100 proof. Vanilla, oak, some nuttiness and a hint of leather. Dry and it's a little thin. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for me but flavor is really good especially at the price point. Vanilla finish with a some more wood and spice finish.30.0 USD per Bottle -
Port Charlotte 10 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 13, 2020 (edited August 14, 2020)Peat and fresh cut straw on the nose. Taste is Vanilla and grasses with peat and light smoke in the finish. Some bitter fruit midway too. Bandaid on the finish at times and almost white chocolate after the glass sat a few minutes. Not as complex as Laphroaig 10 but the peat is subtle and lends itself to the overall finish nicely. Easy way into the heavy peats and I don't think this will be my last bottle of this one.
