First impressions were not good, young, spirity and one note.
20 minutes in the glass made a huge difference as the ethanol disappeared and the nose and palate revealed chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, light spice, and sweet red fruit notes. The finish is medium length, with restrained sweet, spicy and bitter notes.
The port casks lend this a nice bit of cherry deliciousness, but I couldn't help but think it would have been so much better with a higher ABV (only 40%) and some more age.
This is actually quite an interesting whisky, full of old oak funk and great port flavors. Good spice and although I'd like to see how this would taste at 46%ABV, it's fine at 40%. It's very much port forward and unlike any other port finished whiskey I've tried.
