I’ve not had many Chichibu’s, but the ones I’ve had have a certain subtle elegance about them, despite the age being usually in the single digits. It truly speaks to the art and craft of the master distiller. It’s done with passion and sense of pride. And yes, the prices are clearly indicative of its quality.
Fortunately, mine was only a sample….I wasn’t ready to cough up the exorbitant secondary prices. And I didn’t win the ballot…so, resorted to settling for a 3cl sample.
Nose is aromatic. Keeping the peat at bay surprisingly. Citrus and honey. Some hay.
Palette is where the peat makes an appearance. It’s subtle, not like a Lag or Ardbeg. But you know it’s lurking there. The peat is well balanced against cedar, and some honey and florals. And mezcal…wow.
This is really impressive. It’s like having a 25 yr old Caol Ila, with a dose of oriental sandalwood. Secondary is probably too high, but TWE still might have samples. Worth looking into.

@Slainte-Mhath single casks versions are near impossible to get, especially if they’re peated. Open and enjoy for a special occasion !
@PBMichiganWolverine Nice! I was lucky enough to buy the only Chichibu Single Cask which recently came to Norway: https://distiller.com/spirits/chichibu-2011-cask-5578-lmdw-65th-anniversary - They ordered 12 bottles... and got one. For the whole country. Yes.
@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah, prices seem to inflate extremely quickly for any Chichibu release. I’m hopeful to win one eventually and be able to explore and share it with friends, but I’m just glad that TWE usually has samples of these releases for people to try.
@pkingmartin i think the ballot was at $250. I’m gonna guess very few of those winners are opening this, considering secondary is already well over double
I also unfortunately didn’t win in the ballot but am happy I managed to get a sample of this. I’m really looking forward to it after reading your review.
