Compass Box The Story of the Spaniard
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed
October 9, 2022 (edited April 28, 2023)
From the flagbearers of quality blends, the Story of the Spaniard is Compass Box's take on whiskies aged in Spanish wine casks. On the nose, orange jaffa cakes, toffee and ginger candies mingle with lemons, cinnamon and hints of leather. It's got depth without complexity, if you know what I mean. Rich, fruity and spicy, the palate continues with strawberries, honey and cloves, highlighting a lovely sweet and sour interplay. Dark chocolate, cherries and gentle spices conclude the herbal and slightly dry aftertaste. A perfect everyday dram, easy and quaffable.

@PBMichiganWolverine Yes, I remember that story very well. Too bad you barely got the last dram. However, it's something you probably won't forget, and whisky is all about sharing.
@Slainte-Mhath I’d gladly send one—I wish I still had a few pours left. I barely got one pour myself. The bottle was taken out when a few family friends came over, and it was quickly finished before I got barely one ounce. I’ve been eyeing that Ultramarine, just not convinced if it’s price tag, so waiting to read reviews on it first.
@PBMichiganWolverine Well, if you have a sample left, I would certainly not mind to review it as well. I am currently checking on Ultramarine, not quite sure if it is worth €350.
@Slainte-Mhath those two ( No Name and Flaming Heart) were really good , but I think the top dog, in my opinion, was Tobias and the Angel
@islay_emissary Well, I have tried both No Name and Flaming Heart before, so I think your prediction is spot-on. Will be interesting to see which of them comes out on top.
@Slainte-Mhath - I think you’ll find no name and flaming heart scoring in the 90+ range. Couple of great dreams. Cheers
Additional comment: Thankfully, my sense of smell and taste have now recoved after my second round of COVID-19. My plans for the rest of the year are to review some Compass Box Limited Editions, starting with Menagerie and Experimental Grain, and then rounding things off with No Name and Flaming Heart.
Additional comment: This tasting note concludes my review of the Compass Box core range, here is my personal ranking: 1. Spice Tree (88 pts), 2. The Peat Monster (87 pts), 3. Hedonism (86 pts), 4. The Story of the Spaniard (85 pts), 5. Orchard House (85 pts), 6. Oak Cross (84 pts). There is not a single expression I do not like, this is a pretty solid line-up. Well done, Compass Box!
