I think I've come to the realization that I prefer my sherried whiskys well aged (entire time in first fill casks) and my peated Islays not so much. I love the peated intensity of the 10, An Cuan and others. The 18 whilst a very good whisky just doesn't grab me as this aspect is mostly absent....the extended age having allowed the cask to suck most of the peat out. I think to be honest part of the fact I'm rating this a 4 rather than a 3 is my love of Laphroaig and the fact I paid less than $100 USD for the bottles I bought. Having said all that I did enjoy drinking my way through the bottle in a session with friends though and most rated it as their favorite whisky on the night of the several we tried

Cheers :-). I have one bottle left and there are still a few duty free places with some stock in NZ under the $100USD price point so I'll prob get a few more bottles if they are still available when I head to the USA in July. If not to drink at least for collection / future resale purposes. Yes def keen on trying the Lore but thats more like $120USD+ over here
My one and only bottle of 18 year old has been long gone and all I have are fading memories of it. I would love to revisit it again just to see if my thoughts would echo yours. With prices for the remaining few bottles running $140+ now and its replacement "Lore" coming down a bit, I doubt I will ever pony up the money to find out. Plus, Lore is fantastic and I see no reason (other than collectibility) to seek the 18 out. Great review. Cheers.
