Truly rich, sweet and smoky. Deep concentrated caramelized agave, a hint of oak, and a hint of smoky complexity. Absolutely delicious. The richest, most complex tequila I’ve had to date. Worth the $180, in Ontario.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. It’s expensive but it’s worth it. It’s significantly better that DJ 1842 and only $20 more.
Thanks for the reply! I enjoy pretty much all spirits, so I’m not worried that I won’t like it, it was more a question of value. I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder though. I’ve just read so many wonderful things about this tequila, I think it’s time I take the plunge!
Thanks! I’d say this, all day long. Tequilas, tequila styles and people’s preferences vary greatly. As one of few Extra Anejo tequilas at the LCBO this is probably the longest aged tequila I’ve had and therefore it’s got more richness and complexity than other available options. I can’t guarantee you’ll like it as much as I do but I’d say buy this while you can.
Love your reviews. Looking at either getting a bottle of this Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia or two bottles that total about the same cost, Marca Negra Mezcal and something else. Thoughts? (Shopping at the LCBO).
Ya that sounds about right
I sense the reason why japanese whisky availability in Canada is limited is because the producing companies don't want to pay the high import fees charged by local governments and federal customs in Canada
Looking up major online retailers that ship worldwide such as master of malt, whiskey exchange, and dekanta do not ship to canada because of strict customs regulations. From what I looked up Ontario is not the only province in Canada that has a liquor monopoly. As I mentioned before, your best shot of trying japanese whisky is either getting what's available where you live or, when traveling to another country that has more options, buy the japanese whisky you want in that other country, put it in your checked luggage, and bring it home with you. Here is a good website where you can find this information whenever you are outside of Canada. winesearcher.com
That's the other "funny" part. It's impossible to order from anyone other than the LCBO. They have a total and complete monopoly on spirits here. No online company can ship here. And at the rare chance you find one you'd be taxed so much to import it that it wouldn't be worth it. As for the bars, there are some good ones. Their stock is often limited to what the LCBO has, unless they have specific brokers they deal with. Those bars are pretty much exclusive to the city, and I don't make it down there often...
I just looked up LCBO and it only has those 3. Not only that, at higher prices than what I can get them in New York. You can order some Japanese whisky online to your home from any place that delivers to Ontario. Or, you can try japanese whisky at any restaurant or bar in Ontario that has it. I'm sure there are plenty in Toronto.
Your right, I haven't tried any Japanese Whisky yet, mostly due to availability. Here in Ontario the LCBO is god and we currently have only 3 available, Suntory Toki, Hibiki Harmony, and recently added Iwai Tradition. I'll have to give them a try.
I agree, Cuervo could be a much better brand. They make all their money off the cheap stuff though.
Also, it's such a shame Jose Cuervo makes such an amazing tequila in the Reserva de La Familia while it heavily sells and markets its Especial mixto junk.
You seem to leave many great views on whiskey, rum, and tequila. However, I noticed something missing in your reviews. Japanese Whisky. Japanese whisky has become a thing lately and is some of the best whisky in the world. Here are some Japanese whiskies I recommend you to try. Yamazaki 12/18/25, Hakushu 12/18/25, Hibiki Harmony/12 (discontinued, hard to find)/17/21 Yoichi 10 (discontinued, hard to find)/15 (discontinued, hard to find)/20(discontinued hard to find), Taketsuru 12(discontinued, hard to find)/17/21
