High West Campfire
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in) Utah, Multiple Countries

I’ve reviewed this one already on the old Distiller page for the earlier edition of this and my original review holds up. This is what I said previously:
”This is without a doubt one of the most unique and tasty whiskeys I’ve ever tried. Due to the multi-national composition of the blend, it’s hard to pin down as one type. Imagine the taste of a bourbon with the complex spicy mid-palate of a rye with the smoky finish of an Islay or Island. The perfect desert dram and something perfectly unique for your collection!"
I would add to that by saying that the category of blended American whiskey doesn’t get much press but with Scotch blenders like Compass Box reviving the blend category to the level of art, I think we can expect similar American offerings in the future, including from the folks at High West.

@Whiskey_Hound you won’t be disappointed. Ive had the pre and post 2018 versions and both were unique, intriguing, and fantastic. A truly unique whiskey! One of the few bottles I bought and finished this year. The only other bottle I take down that fast is Redbreast 12. Hope you enjoy it!
@WhiskeyLonghorn No worries man. I've been planning on picking one of these up, but in all my research there doesn't seem to be any useful info. Regardless, I'm looking forward to this one
@Whiskey_Hound I wish I had better info for you. My understanding is that anything from 2018 and beyond is the “new” mashbill with their own rye rather than the MGP rye.
@WhiskeyLonghorn That I knew. What I'm wondering is how you can tell if what you're buying is the from the 2018 batch or from the original mash bill. You have your review under the 2018 edition, so I'm just curious how you were able to determine which version it is
@Whiskey_Hound somewhere on the bottle they have the bottling date for each batch. In 2018 they swapped out the MGP rye (which I never really cared for) with their own distillate, which I think greatly improved the Campfire. There’s been some chatter about how High West has gone downhill since they were bought out by Constellation Brands, but part of me thinks that it’s because they’re transitioning to their own rye rather than the MGP rye, from whom they bought a lot of well aged stock. I’ll be curious to see what High West is putting out in about 5-6 years, which seems to be the sweet spot for well aged rye.
Nice review! How can you tell if it's the new or old recipe?
