So, I finally got around to opening a bottle of this one for my amateur blending experiment. I figured I might as well give it a proper score. For those of you that may have read my impromptu review from Whiskyfest DC back in 2018 I have this update:
This is a pretty damn good whisky. After my buddy @Telex and I sampled this during the Ardbeg seminar at the show, I was so wiped out by all the drams we sampled I just purely missed the nuances of this dram. The wine cask notes are present, even if briefly, before the heavy smoke and high ABV burn kick in. The wine cask finishing also provides a little color in the Glencairn and there’s a nice little, grape and berry hit from the cask. It’s quick, so you need to pay attention, but then the meaty and smoky Ardbeg goodness kicks in and washes the sweetness away. The finish is hot, as it should be with a Committee bottling, but the Ardbeg character carries through and leaves you smiling and glad you dropped the coinage.
As it is, it’s a 4-4.25 star dram, and the Ardbeg fanboys should seek a bottle out while they are still floating around and possibly catching dust on some mom-n-pop liquor stores around the country. It’s good stuff and worthy of the CE designation. Cheers.

@LeeEvolved nice...thanks! I’ll be ready right after July 4th weekend. Will send over pours of a few things to you guys as well
@PBMichiganWolverine - I just opened my duplicate 2011 & 2012 Cairdeas bottles and I’m sure I’ll eventually open the 2008-2010 Cairdeas bottles I have, too. I’m saving you pours of each. Let me know if/when you’re ready for a care package.
@LeeEvolved yeah, i’ll Be getting the Laphroaig Cairdeas as well. That’s the only one I have since their first one. Might as well keep that going
@PBMichiganWolverine - yeah, I’ve slowed my buying tremendously but I still need to keep certain sets intact. I’m gonna need the regular Drum and the Laphroaig Triple Cask CS Cairdeas when they hit shelves. I’m working diligently on a set of the Kavalan Solist bottles at the moment. Collecting is a sickness haha.
@LeeEvolved I ended up selling my Drum CE. I had a pour at @Richard-ModernDrinking ‘s place, and was fine with one tasting. Not sure I’ll be chasing their CEs anymore. I think their regular lineup is already damn good
@PBMichiganWolverine - still haven’t landed a bottle yet. I’ve kinda given up on the CE bottles, but I do need two of the regular Drum to keep my Feis Ile collections intact. Those should be hitting the states by July.
Have you tried their Drum yet?
