Seeing this bottle pop up on Distiller reminded that I have been working thru this bottle but had yet to review it! I quite enjoyed last year's release and so when this popped up at my local Costco for under $50 it was an instant buy (SRP is $59.99 for reference). So what is this release all about? It's essentially a small batch of MGP sourced rye barrels that are vatted and released at Cask Strength. Thankfully this release doesn't include the chemical additive there other releases currently do (and hence the Straight designation and why I buy it). Is it any good? Let's dive in: On the palette it's rich and pretty smooth given the proof. Classic MGP notes of candied ginger, clove, pepper, dill and some toffee and slight vanilla to offset the spice. Definitely spicier than last year's release. Give this one some time to oxidize as it definitely improves. For the price paid it's a solid buy. If you don't mind dill and like MGP Rye profile this is a definite buy for you. Cheers all!

@dubz480 NICE, that stuff is typically 2x that iirc. In my state only 2 Costco's sell liquor, (others just beer/wine) by state law. I talked to one of the buyers, he typically goes 7 figures in purchases in a single month. Serious wheels and deals!

@Scott_E yea Costco is the 800 pound gorilla of liquor stores, they can literally name their own price and tell the distributors to eff the H off if they don't like it. You can find pirces at Costco you will NEVER EVER see in any other store including the other big box's.

@ dubz480 gotcha man, well MGP can make decent rye but so can Heaven Hill and BeamSun lets not even get started on Saz rye hehe,,

@BeppeCovfefe it's basically an artificial flavoring they claim helps it taste like the original recipe (or just BS marketing the company was founded on). Knob Rye SiB are the best overall value in Rye IMO. This one is definitely a good MGP rye if thats your thing. Cheers brother and hope all is well!

I'm wondering what chemicals are being added? Assuming a 10-15% malt(barley or rye) fermenting agents shouldnt be needed. Maybe something to change the PH or aid in the filtering? Or is it more on the backend, anti-coagulating agent? This sounds like a decent rye but I'll likely stick to my Knob Cask rye for about the same $$, cheers!

Is there anything your local Costco doesn’t sell? In NY, our stores cannot sell liquor or wine. Beer only.
