Slainte-Mhath
Myken Peated Sherry
Single Malt — Nordland, Norway
Reviewed
December 7, 2019 (edited December 9, 2019)
Norway's first-ever peated whisky was matured in 40 l seasoned Oloroso casks for 3 years, bottled at 47% ABV and given a craft presentation. Not overtly young, the nose starts off with chimney soot, dried fruits and fenalår. Hints of rosemary, stockfish and sweet cherries add some complexity. Peat smoke, orange zest and loads of pepper drive the aromatic and herbal-fresh taste of this youngster. With a salty edge of licorice and fading wood smoke, the finish dissolves into raspberry sweetness. At 3 years of age, this is a remarkably solid dram from Myken.

@Slainte-Mhath - I have Boston Harbor Distillery right in my back yard and I have yet to visit or try any of their stuff. They sell their stuff so cheaply I just assume it’s rotgut.
@Soba45 Having variety in your collection and exploring other spirits is the best way to avoid palate fatigue!
@Slainte-Mhath Nice! It's good to have variety in your collection as the same old gets boring. I'm dipping my toes further into the mescal world courtesy of @cascode and also grappa!
@Soba45 I think we should all support our local craft distilleries. Speaking of which, I could not resist buying a bottle of 'Thomson Manuka Wood Smoke'. I am planning to review it next year along with Sullivans Cove.
Sounds interesting, nice to see you are supporting local efforts:-)
@Slainte-Mhath I tried fermented shark in Akuryeki—-yeah, not sure I’d try it again. However I refused to try whale meat, just out of principle
@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah, stockfish is very... unique. Still better than the fermented shark from Iceland, though. Yummy!
I had stockfish in Lofoten and fenalar in Bergen. Latter was much better than former...both very unique though
Additonal comment: Fenalår is a salted, dried and cured leg of lamb, a Norwegian specialty. Not sure if the same can be said about stockfish (cough cough), but it's definitely very Norwegian...
Additional comment: Myken Peated Sherry is another example that young whisky and peat go well together. It is amazing how much you can do after only 3 years of maturation. I think there are good things on the horizon from this small distillery!
