During a recent stay at an all-inclusive hotel, I was met with a very limited choice of whisky options: the infamous Canadian Club, VAT69, and another blend I have never even heard of. Do I really want to review THIS bottle? Well, let's get on with it. On the nose… Hello? Anyone there? Indistinct corn sweetness, alcohol and some grassy notes - that's it. Maybe it's not as bad as I thought? I am proven wrong. Harsh and watery at the same time, this tastes like a sweetened, oak-flavored vodka. Thank God, the burning finish is short to nonexistent. Seriously, no.

@Slainte-Mhath Lot 40 is a great place to start. Thinking about picking up another bottle myself. Even here in the States (mind you I’m much closer to Mexico than Canada...) we don’t get a lot of the quality stuff. Probably less than ten bottles I’d actually consider buying.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Canadian whisky is hard to find in Europe. I bought a bottle of Lot 40 from a specialist shop which I am planning to review later this year. I also got 2 Schenley's 8 yo, vintage 1967 and 1969, from a distant relative who passed away. I am looking forward to open them and explore the content!
@Slainte-Mhath it’s too bad there’s so much bad Canadian whisky on the market. There’s some really intriguing and compelling bottles coming from Canada in the last ten years that I’m starting to give another look. Sadly, This isn’t one of them. @PBMichiganWolverine is right about the Canadian Club 40 Year (and 41 & 42 now). For some reason, Canada just doesn’t export a lot of their best stuff. My wife is going to Alberta for a business trip later this year. I’m sendin a shopping list with her :)
@Generously_Paul H2H tastings can be really interesting... I did that with an old bottle of Chivas 12 from the 1970s, comparing it to its modern equivalent. You instantly notice that they used better quality casks some decades ago.

I have an unopened bottle of CC from 1967 or 1976 (whichever one it is I have an open bottle of Seagrams VO from the other year). It is bottled at 43%, would be interesting to compare them if I ever decide to open it

@cascode I'd rather use Chivas 12 or Famous Grouse for mixing. At least you won't die when you try these neat! There are so many better bottom shelf blends around.
@Slainte-Mhath It disappears almost without trace in mixed drinks - even just in a long drink with Coke & ice it's almost undetectable - you just get a vague sense of "brown spirit"
@cascode Anaemic is probably the best descriptor for this bottle. I wouldn't even put it into cocktails.
Good summary - this is without question the most anaemic whisky I've tasted.
Additional comment: If you are following my reviews, you know that I like to keep things positive. I firmly believe that every whisky has something to offer, even if it is only as a mixer. Hence, I rarely give ratings below 2 stars (I do not give scores above 4 stars very often either). It's not that Canadian Club is very offensive, it's simply featureless, lacking in flavor and what's worst: it doesn't taste like whisky!
