Drago Whiskey 3 Year
Blended — Canary Islands , Spain

Who would have thought that they distill whisky on La Palma? Mostly a rum producer, Destilerías Aldea named this blend after the Canarian dragon tree. A bit peculiar and flat, the nose offers hints of sour cream, green apples and grapes. Leafy bitterness and whiffs of old engine oil emerge. The arrival is oily, fruity and quite aromatic, followed by light peat smoke, Aloe vera and strange herbal notes in the development. Lemon zest, mild sourness and a dash of oak characterize the short but flawless finish. At 22 € per bottle, Drago is certainly a bargain.

Additional comment: What strikes me is that this blend tastes much older than 3 years. With a distillery location west of Africa, this should not come as a surprise. Maturation will be much quicker as compared to Scotland. I am looking forward to taste more expressions from this brand.
Additional comment: Thumbs up for the bold '3 years old' age statement on the bottle! For blends, you don't see that very often. Destilerías Aldea produce both malt and grain whisky, and they seem to use local barley. What I really like about Drago is that the terroir shines through. If you have ever done a hike on Tenerife, you will know what I mean. Complex green notes, agave, cactus, Aloe vera. Given that this bottle is cheaper than JW Red Label, it's hard to complain!
