On the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, amidst the Covid-19 paranoia (does everyone have enough toilet paper?), I pour myself a dram of this Irish whiskey thatwas generously provided by long time Distiller mate (to everyone) @PBMichiganWolverine I truly enjoy a good Irish whiskey. They are often overlooked and sometimes judged against its neighbors spirit, which one may be missing out on some good enjoyment from the other side of the sea.
A Lightly copper colored spirit that opens with a raw sourdough with vanilla, honey, floral, orchard fruits, tropical fruits with a bit of baking spice. More specifically, honeysuckle with Fuji apples and toasted coconut, caramel, apricots, mangos all sprinkled with nutmeg. A very aromatic nose.
On a creamy body, flavors of the Mizunara (as I learned what this wood imparts). Vanilla, fresh fruit (cocktail): pears, apples, vanilla and honey. Baking spices begin to kick in as it begins to fade: fresh nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon and wood spices which gives the palate a mild tingling.
Drying wood tannins with a touch of black cherry, black pepper and orange rinds provides a long finish.
A fantastic opening which is embodied on the palate. The lighter flavors imparted from from the Mizunara puncheon barrel provides a powerful influence, but not overpowering, on the gentle Irish distillate. Aromatic and flavorful with a nice woody finish. Japanese and Irish. If you like Irish whiskey, this will not disappoint. In the ranks of Green Spot and Redbreast, but the former can be had at a third to half the cost. Still quite good, though. [Tasted: 3/14/20][89/100]

@Scott_E @Soba45 😀
@PBMichiganWolverine @Soba45 was thinking the same. IPA beer for a sanitizer? Thanks for the clarification. I now need return all the Dogfish cases I just ran out and purchased.
@PBMichiganWolverine Haha i did think why are they obsessed with a particular type of beer?
@Soba45 @Scott_E oh...I should clarify —IPA as in isopropyl alcohol...not india pale ale...
@Scott_E @PBMichiganWolverine Yeah it's funny as they say plain old soap and water is better and hand sanitizer should be a second choice so haven't bothered. Kids and my sport is all getting canceled now. One school got shut down as a kid got it
@Scott_E people are also flicking to liquor stores to buy Everclear. Since they can’t get hand sanitizers, and they can’t get IPA, next in line is Everclear.
@Soba45 @PBMichiganWolverine hopefully PA folks are home stocked https://www.pahomepage.com/news/pennsylvania-liquor-control-board-to-close-all-fine-wine-good-spirits-stores/amp/

@PBMichiganWolverine Oh yes, the stock market has a long long way to fall. I'm in cash, term deposits bonds and small bit of conservative funds...even that i've spread around in case of financial institution failure as govt guarantees only go so high. I'll get back on the roller coaster once the recession eases in a year or so and hopefully ride it back up to the top over the following decade. :-)
@Soba45 this ain’t going away in a few weeks. it’s getting scary
Woah I thought NZ was bad with mandatory isolation from anyone coming overseas! My sister's wedding this weekend just got canceled our national airline is going to collapse without govt help. revenue usually $6bill down to $1bill!
@Scott_E @1901 it’s the same here in NJ. Our entire staff is 100% WFM mobilized, schools closed, all gatherings canceled. Feels like wartime scenarios, the enemy isn’t carrying guns, instead a contagion
@1901 pretty much the same here in NY/Long Island. Long Island schools closed for two weeks. Hording mania in full swing. NYC schools closed until April 20. St. Patrick’s parade, too, cancelled. Retail stores beginning to shut down for two weeks. Almost to insanity.
Nice review! I loved the Glendalough 17 Year Mizunara Finish but I haven’t had this yet. Re Covid19 we are in moderate lockdown in Ireland - all schools, universities, pubs, restaurants, libraries, playgrounds, museums and public attractions closed and all St. Patrick’s Day parades and celebrations cancelled. All concerts and sporting events cancelled as there can be no gatherings over 100 people indoors, or over 500 outdoors. Most offices are therefore closed with working from home required for those who can do so. Social distancing in full effect (for the most part). Supermarkets are open though, so toilet roll shopping is still an option!
@PBMichiganWolverine I probably do, but, laughingly, I don’t know what sandlewood smells like. Never encountered that (yet)
Do you get sandalwood from mizunara? I always get that Asian temple sandalwood scent
