Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA

This may be one of my new favorite bourbons, and it's definitely helped me out of my recent bourbon slump. Maybe it's something about summer, but bourbon just feels right during this time of year (let's be clear, it's good anytime, but I find myself reaching for Scotch in the cooler months).
The nose is subtle, muted, even after repeated visits and reviewing mid bottle. If I look real hard, I get notes of fresh pastries with lots of butter and maybe a chocolate filling. Not surprising given that Woodford triple distills their bourbon, so it's mouthfeel and nose is somewhat (read: SOMEWHAT) reminiscent of an Irish or Lowland pour. The palate is where this one shines. Rich, bready, coating, chocolaty (love that note!), oaky, but not as much as you'd expect given the name, and smooth all the way down with a hug that lasts for days! I've gone through half a bottle this week already, with plans to buy another when some room frees up in my cabinet. I can see why this one is popular and why it's got so many reviews. Great stuff!
P.S. - Do yourselves a HUGE favor and eat some rich milk chocolate (Hershey's will do, but look for the good stuff) while you drink this pour. Thank me later.

@Ctrexman don’t worry, it’s coming! I’ve been sippin’ slow on that bottle thinking about what I want to say. It’s quite unlike anything I’ve ever tried.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Still waitin on that BM Sherry review....Ive come close to buying another bottle but might try the cask strength first
@Whiskey_Hound Nice review. I don't drink much bourbon, but Woodford Reserve is one of the bottles I really like.
Great review. I’m a fan of this as well. Really interesting that you compare this to Irish/Lowland. I’ll have to remember to look for that when I get this next. It’s a great observation
@WhiskeyLonghorn Nice!! I picked this up a few weeks ago. Will work the chocolate pairing.
@WhiskeyLonghorn I’ve not tried that combination...but I can see the salinity working well there. Also...try making bread pudding with a Highlander or Speysider. Really adds to the flavor.
@PBMichiganWolverine I wish more people would talk about whisky and food pairings! Every issue of Whisky Advocate has a page or two devoted to that, and as I'm looking for new ways to explore my bottles, I'm doing more food pairings. Another favorite of mine is Talisker with fresh Gulf Coast oysters.
@Zachary-Robbins Woodford seems to really play up the chocolate malt angle. I see that some of their special editions even feature that note on the marketing. Fine by me!
At Woodford they actually give you chocolates to pair with your whiskey tasting.
Sweet and tasty. I guess I’d better grab a candy bar and get back to this bottle. I’ll tell my wife it’s your fault, haha.
It’s good read about dessert or food pairings with whiskey. Wine has that huge advantage. I also found Islay ones to work really well with sushi
