Time to start working through my sample stores in an effort to clear out my cabinet, much like our friend @Soba45 . Starting with this bottle, expect sample reviews for about the next two weeks.
This one is a NAS that looks like it was aged in bourbon barrels, and there's a lot of lovely heather peat smoke on the nose. A lovely Highland Park calling card. Beneath that it's fruity: Apples, pears, etc. It's slightly astringent, but not that much at 40%. It enters soft on the palate. The malt really shines on this one, with a puff of smoke enveloping it all, with a surprisingly long finish!
It's a bit one-note, but I find myself liking this more than Highland Park 12 year. Plus a regular bottle has an affordable price tag. This could be a great introduction to someone looking to get into peaty scotch without the Islay 1-2 punch. Good stuff!

@Soba45 Here's my suggestion for your next hobby... artisan chocolate. I'm a chocolate reviewer and I got into whisk(e)y to see how it pairs with high quality artisan chocolate. There is a whole parallel universe of chocolate out there! I've reviewed over 1200 chocolate bars since 2007. (Check out my review notes by googling "Chocofiles reviews" to get to my very basic reviews website.).
Slow and steady is probably the right approach. I usually drink no more than 3-4 drams a week, with a few exceptions (like visiting a friend's bar). I also cut down my reviews to 2 per month. I've been overactive with other hobbies before and it always got me to the point where I just dropped it and started something new. Don't want to drop whisky, so a relaxed attitude might help.
@PBMichiganWolverine @WhiskeyLonghorn I the same. I only have drinks on weekends. I been crazy busy lately and tasting notes have been slowing. Have a ton of samples still to get through and a ton of unopened bottles. But, I look forward to doing so. Slow and steady.
@Jan-Case Yes sadly moderation on anything is not my forte..a tub of ice cream disappears pretty fast in my house :-)
@WhiskeyLonghorn i don’t know, just me personally, but I think everything is a balance. Having only 3cl 1x or 2x /week has kept me interested in over 15 years. It also allows me to use the remaining 6 days to balance with other non-alcohol drinks ( tea, kombucha, fresh juices, etc).
@PBMichiganWolverine your story is what first inspired me to cut back. Once I’m done with sample-palooza and finish my bottles of Talisker and Glendronach 18, it’s time to step back and let my liver regenerate and work on my waistline.
@WhiskeyLonghorn not sure I’d trust the US guidelines...we’re more suspect to lobby interests. The EU is more consumer friendly. Personally, I do 1 ounce ( about 3cl) once or twice a week.
@WhiskeyLonghorn I guess it comes down to kinda the same. That 1.5 oz equals 44 ml. But the term „Drink“ can be interpreted in different ways because I guess they might be thinking about spirits in the 35 to 40 % range like vodka or rum. I made a spreadsheet where I can let it calculate the total alcohol based on ABV and amount. That helps me calculating it based on my knowledge how much 30 and 50 ml are in standard Glencairn glasses.
@Jan-Case what country are you in? The US guidelines are much more generous (and unhealthy). Up to two drinks a day for adult men, and one a day for women. A serving size is a 1 1/2 ounce pour.
@Soba45 and @WhiskeyLonghorn I am actively enjoying whisky for a year and a half now and early on already started to try to limit my intake by recommendation from our health ministry which if you stick to will count as non-harmful. (Meaning as an adult male 100 gramms of alcohol in one week distributed across 5 days of 20 gramms daily. That almost exactly equals one 50 ml dram with a 50% ABV on 5 days a week. If you are healthy and don’t drink anything else with alcohol there should be no health risks.)

@Ctrexman it’s different from the 12 year also. It’s got next to no sherry influence, where the 12 is “the great all rounder”. Problem there is I think HP has a bad habit of using refill sherry casks that can come off a bit too astringent. That’s why I found this pour favorable. The bourbon barrels round it off nicely, shows off the spirit better, and there’s no risk of a short supply of subpar quality bourbon barrels.

More than the 12yr......hmmm I think ill have to try this out. Dont worry guys there are plenty on this site to pick up the slack lol
@Soba45 glad to know I wasn’t the only one who moved though beer and wine first! They’re the whisky gateways!
@WhiskeyLonghorn Yeah I find that I've been spending a fortune over the last several years and my esophagus and stomach really don't like straight spirits much any more, I'm generally in trouble after a couple of drams. A lot of my friends have quit as well. Plus like my beer and wine phase which lasted a decade and several years respectively I've got to the point where the novelty of trying different stuff has mostly worn off. There is very very little new stuff which interests me whiskey wise...and even that is the stupidly expensive stuff I can't get hold or or afford! Not sure what my new hobby will be though..not really collecting anything I can't drink..haha
@Soba45 I’m in a similar position (minus the rare bottles). I’m trying to whittle down the collection to four bottles, burn through the samples, finish the non-whisky liquor in cocktails, and become a much more casual drinker. This pandemic hasn’t been the healthiest move...
I'm down to two samples however tomorrow @PBMichiganWolverine 's sample care package looks likes it's arriving which should top me up slightly! I offloaded a dozen bottles to auction and friends last week...mostly ones I've already tried and are now worth a lot more than i originally paid. I've got another several to a dozen to offload later in the year when my mates bank accounts recover and then I'll slowly enjoy the several remaining overtime as part of easing into my whiskey tasting retirement phase...haha
