Aged Rum — Jamaica

Continuing with my rum journeys. This is a fine rum indeed. It gets quite a bit of love and is mostly deserved. Neat the nose brings thick dark molasses, incense and spices with melted butter and planks from an old shipwreck. Palate is hearty and robust. Simmered brown sugar and baking spice lead the way. Plenty of earthy barrel notes to balance the sweetness. Finishes with charred oak, pipe tobacco and drying dark chocolate with the black strap fading slow. This is not as sweet as El Dorado or Diplimatico with a slight funk(hogo) reminiscent of Pussers. Overall very well executed Jamaican rum with great flavor and value....86/100

@jsk Dang, you beat me to that statement and also included more useful information!
A solid Jamaican rum. I'd love some more complexity to balance it out, but a great intro to unsweetened rums with honest age statements!
The Appleton 12 year is a solid rum and a great value. Works really well in cocktails, too. It's a good introduction to Jamaican rum (if you don't like the modest funk in Appleton, stuff like Hampden or Worthy Park are probably best avoided). If you want to splurge, the 21-year is fabulous.
