New Booze News: Woodford Reserve and Tipperary Irish Whiskeys

May 24, 2017

It seems like every day we find press releases about new spirits about to hit the market. Before our official reviews for these bottles arrive, we wanted to give you a sneak peak about what’s coming soon to stores near you. Here’s the New Booze News for the week of May 22, 2017!

Woodford Reserve is releasing three bottlings in their Distillery Series collection this summer–all featuring rye.

Blended Rye Whiskey (available May 2017)

This whiskey is a blend of two different whiskeys.  69% of the blend contains an 11 year-old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey with a mashbill of 53% rye, 33% corn, and 14% malted barley. The remaining 31% of the blend consists of 5 year-old whiskey distilled from a 100% rye mash which was aged in used Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. This blended rye whiskey will be available in select Kentucky retailers and at the Woodford Reserve Distillery. Suggested retail price is $49.99. Please note, this is packaged in 375ml bottles.

For those who would like a deeper look into Woodford Reserve’s experiments, check out our recent feature with Chris Morris, Brown-Forman’s Master Distiller. Regarding this release, Morris says, “The opportunity to blend two outstanding rye whiskey profiles was too good to pass up.”  He continues, “Since the entire Woodford Reserve Series concept is about flavor innovation, this whiskey series expression is sure to impress whiskey aficionados.”

Toasted Oak Rye (available June 2017)

Releasing in time for Father’s Day, this bottling also features rye. This whiskey was distilled from a rye mash bill and aged in used Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels. The whiskey was then re-barreled in barrels which were used to age their Woodford Reserve Double Oak Bourbon. Expect the same pricing and availability as the Blended Rye Whiskey.

Woodford also plans to release a specialty barrel-finished rye that has yet to be announced.

10 Year Single Malt

Released in 2017, this is the first age-statement release from Mackmyra for wide release. The Swedish single malt was matured 50 meters underground at Mackmyra’s Bodås mine warehouse. Ex-bourbon and American oak ex-oloroso sherry casks were used for this release. Over 20,000 bottles were produced with over half remaining in Sweden with the other bottles available in select export markets.

Knockmealdowns Single Malt 10 Year

Released in May 2017 to the US, this Irish single malt is named after the Knockmealdown mountain range which borders Counties Tipperary and Waterford respectively in southern Ireland. Knockmealdowns is part of the Mountain Range line of whiskeys from Tipperary Boutique Distillery which signify their range of older whiskeys. This single malt was aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels and is comprised of just six barrels. Suggested retail price $99.99 and is available now.

Watershed Single Malt

Also launching in the US is this Irish single malt comprised of six first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. These whiskey barrels were chosen to be married by Tipperary’s Malt Master Stuart Nickerson. This sourced whiskey is a non-age statement release which uses water from Ballindoney Farm in Tipperary to cut the whiskey to 47% ABV. The whiskey is non chill-filtered. Suggested retail price is $69.99.

100% Malt Spirit

This limited edition bottling was created by Master Distiller Piet van Leijenhorst and it highlights Bols’ malt wine which is made from long-fermented corn, rye and wheat with juniper berries. 100 limited edition clay bottles signed by van Leijenhorst were released at the Lucas Bols Distillery on the 10th of May 2017 with a wider release to come October 2017.
