Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed July 21, 2019 (edited October 26, 2019)One heck of a dark whisky. The nose doesn't really blow me away. I couldn't really pull out anything worth discussing. A very nice sweetness, some oak, and some very nice wine notes. The whisky opens up with sweetness and is incredibly mellow and the alcohol is completely hidden. If that were the whisky I'd be a touch disappointed at the price point but it would still be good stuff. Then it finishes...and finishes...and finishes...and it just keeps going. Complex oaks, dark fruits, a blend of sweatness from anywhere you can think of. Just one of the best finishes I've had and the opening is more than powerful enough. I'm down right jumping up and down excited about how good a value I got.180.0 USD per Bottle -
Ardbeg Twenty Something 23 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed June 17, 2019 (edited March 22, 2020)Very sherry forward on the nose, this spent time in secondary casks, a lot of time. There's a musty almost stale room / saw mill note in here, likely a light well faded peat is driving this. It has an earthy element as well. But the fruits are dominating the nose, with perhaps some vanilla at the end. There's a very distinct spicy note as well. The finish is a bit acidic in the alcohol bite. Crazy complex. I'm now getting some cinnamon roll dough, not the cinnamon but the dough and a touch of that icing. Taste - Dough, vanilla, a legit funk of some sort and then it fades into this vanilla/earthy/light peat finish that lasts forever. The finish is over taking the opening in a way I've not experienced. Second taste I get more vanilla, light oak, the sherry and fruits are there but muted vs the nose. There's a lightness on the whisky....almost a water like note, despite being a creamy and viscous 46%. Cinnamon roll dough for sure but again I think it's a different spice. The finish starts taking on some of the dark fruits and spices on a second pour along with those vanilla oak and peat long linger notes. For 46% it's got some mouth feel but it comes up a touch short due to a weakness in the mid pallet This is certainly an A whisky but I'm not sure it's an A+ and ranging from 500-650 it's not a great value.625.0 USD per Bottle -
Kurayoshi 18 Year Pure Malt
Blended Malt — Multiple Countries
Reviewed June 12, 2019 (edited September 1, 2019)Nose has some spice I can't put my finger on, honey, and light oak. Taste has a touch of smoke, maybe a splash of salt, savory meats, honey. The finish is toasted oak with hints of vanilla and some kinda of rich savory desert. Not bad for a fake Japanese whisky. I got this on sale for $75 which was about 200 off of the MSRP of about 275 retail. At 75 buy all you can. At over 150, this is a pass.75.0 USD per Bottle -
2016 edition 900 bottles Sherry, Bourbon & Married in Refill Port Cask Nose is absolutely bonkers. Citrus fruits yet with a red wine finish, rich springbank malt, and a hint of oak. Incredibly intense and powerful. The pallet is very vanilla forward with a huge amount of really mellow wood spice, hints of sherry and perhaps grape like notes from the port finish. The finish lasts forever with that nicely seasoned well done wood notes. This comes up short of exceptional. I normally would comment on how at cask strength it would be amazing, but I'm not sure that's needed. The mouth is creamy, viscous, and the alcohol doesn't seem overly tame. I feel weird saying this but it just doesn't have enough impact from the casks it has been in. I think the time in the port was too short and likely too much of it was in the bourbon casks. Meanwhile the oak has mellowed out some of the springbank funk. Make no mistake, this is a truly outstanding whisky and I expect with time it will open up. For now, it's hard to live up to the hype of the price.625.0 USD per Bottle

I was going into this one pretty low expectations but a vanilla bomb with light and sweet notes, great body, great mouth feel, and just hits on all key notes. If you're looking for a sweater vanilla forward scotch, this is wonderful. It's really one of compass boxes's better sweeter forward bottles. 89-91 range for me. I'll go 89 given the 100+ price but it's really close to the 90's and if it were under 100 I'd give it just for value. Worth it at 130, though i've seen it for 150 and he's where I'm getting iffy on value. At that price you might get disappointed.130.0 USD per Bottle

Springbank 21 Year (Single Cask)
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2019 (edited October 9, 2022)Just an other worldly great experience. The underlying malt with the light salts and gentle peat is so deep and complex, it wasn't until my second pour that I realized there was even sherry influence. Of course the perfect blending of oak, spirit, and the finishing of sherry is what brings this one together. Truly an out of body experience. If I could give more refined scores this would be a 96 or 97.240.0 USD per Bottle -
Compass Box Tobias & The Angel
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2019 (edited September 30, 2021)So first pour isn't done yet. first note - wow dusty and spicy. Shockingly odd just from opening the bottle. That fades and yields cream and lightly earth tones. with vanilla and citrus. man - the earthy dark peaty big super old caol and the bright fruity clynelish are almost fighting vs playing nicely with each other. Opens with citrus, turns to the smoke/peat and finishes spicy and citrus floral with I believe sherry kinda dancing over the whole thing and then a long lingering finish that requires old whisky to create. This has some of the best notes I get in old scotch but it's almost too sweat in a pudding like fashion. I really want the darker peat notes to be a hair stronger here. For now I'll give this an 85 out of 100. Mid B which is heavily weighted by the high price. But never review a whisky by the neck pour.480.0 USD per Bottle
