Many people want to know if JW Blue is worth the price tag. The simple answer is no. It is, however, a wonderfully complex and beautiful whisky. Enticing notes of cedar wood smoke and heavily sherried single malts are combined with the fragile antique bookstore tannic notes of old grain whiskies. The bare minimum 40% abv is certainly a sticking point. It is an intriguing whisky to be sure, but for $250usd? Stick with the miniatures.

It has a pretty impressive six grain mash bill. It’s a bit rye forward and less sweet than your run of the mill bourbons. However, at 80 proof it’s too watered down and flat. In the future I will go with the 94 proof Select, bottled in bond or preferably the cask strength (which I hear is amazing).

Spicy, slightly sweet and a great value for a single malt

It’s nothing more than Glenmorangie 10 with virtually no sherry influence.

Sweet and viscous with notes of oatmeal raisin cookies and roasted nuts. An excellent value for an Irish single malt with an age statement.
