Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon

Another one knocked out of the park by the folks at Wild Turkey. Everything a bourbon ought to be, with plenty of fire on the back end.

This is one of my favorite bourbons so far. It’s rich with complex flavors. On the nose, I sense vanilla, green apple, and maybe a hint of pine; it’s very fresh. This bourbon has a round mouthfeel and delectable tastes of maple and toffee, balanced by a brightness that reminds me of unripe banana and an effervescent spicy kick that seems to last for days. I can IMAGINE a better bourbon that’s perhaps a bit less acerbic for the brief moment when it goes down, so I’m leaving room above it in the ratings for this unicorn. But overall, it’s pretty perfect.

This was the first bourbon I’ve had in this adventure that made me go, “dang that’s a good bourbon.” It’s also my first barrel strength bottle. I was expecting more of an alcohol burn at this proof, but it wasn’t overpowering. The flavor of this easily overcame the additional ETOH. I’m not good at picking out individual flavor notes yet, but I could tell this bourbon is loaded with them.
