Deerhammer American Single Malt
American Single Malt — Colorado, USA
Reviewed
December 29, 2020 (edited July 2, 2021)
The label says it's aged for at least 2 years, which I take to mean that MOST of the stock is aged 2 years with some older barrels vatted with each batch to round it out. I'd like to try this at an older age statement, because I like what Deerhammer is doing but it needs more time to soften the edges.
N: Nougat and chocolate on first sniff. A bit dusty.
P: Sweet. Orange, coffee, cocoa, a bit of menthol. A bit harsh.
F: More coffee, and an acetone aftertaste. There's a good beginning here but even a couple more years I think would help round this out.

@PBMichiganWolverine I have no idea if they distribute outside Texas, much less our region of the state...but if they do, check out the Stryker.
@WhiskeyLonghorn i love delbac...if Andalusia is like that, I need to look them up.
@PBMichiganWolverine Andalusia is a small place out in the Texas Hill Country near Garrison Brothers that makes a smoked single malt somewhat like Del Bac.
@PBMichiganWolverine I’m definitely not an American craft whiskey connoisseur by any means, but I’d probably put this Deerhammer in my top 3 in that category along with Ransom The Emerald 1865 & Westland Peated.
@WhiskeyLonghorn oh I’ve not heard of Colkegan or Andulsia...will need to put them on my list. Andalusia is American ? Sounds Spanish...but I’m guessing NM, TX, or AZ ? And yeah...forgot about Stranahan’s. They might be the first craft distillers
@PBMichiganWolverine if throw Colkegan, Stranahans, And Andalusia on there as well.
@WhiskeyLonghorn @tylerss20 totally agree. Might be easier to identify which American craft distillers are good at young age ( I can think of only DelBac, McKenzie, Westland, and New Southern )
“More years to round this out” could be the unofficial motto of 95% of craft whiskey.
