Ive been excited to try this Pikesville after hearing so much about how good a value it is: I’ve recently tried and enjoyed a few ryes, including the Russell’s SiB (very good, super spearmint) and the Willett 4 Year Rye, which tastes like honey soaked flowers and is completely transcendent for me. This Pikesville is 110 proof but doesn’t have a strong nose. There is some caramel and spice but it is surprisingly subdued. The palate has the same caramel and spice, but the same honey and flowers I love in the Willett starts to emerge, and the finish is actually a close approximation of the Willett. This gets better at each stage. Overall, it’s quite good, and the price point is hard to beat for higher proof. Funnily enough, I think it is 75% as good as the Willett, but also only 75% of the price. I’m pretty pleased with this one, but I’d also happily splash out the extra $15 for the enhanced experience of the Willett if it is available. That’s not to say that this isn’t very good though, and I think this will be a regular in my rye rotation.
