Wolfburn Small Batch Release No. 204
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed
April 13, 2021 (edited June 28, 2021)
(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Whisky Tasting, 09 April 2021).
Nose: Sweet, fruity (apple and berries), boiled sweets.
Palate: Oily & sweet, caramelised fruit, oak, vanilla, pepper, hazelnut, orange zest. Very gentle hint of peat.
Finish: Sweet, honeyed, peppery. Sours on the aftertaste.
5 years in 1st fill bourbon, then finished for 6 months in Madiera hogsheads.
This tastes youthful, but maintains a good amount of complexity for a young dram. There's an odd - although pleasant - combination of souring, sweet wine and a peppery youthful whisky. Very easy to drink.
Came 5th out of the six drams, with 9% of the final vote for favourite of the night. 53% of those present said they enjoyed the whisky.

@Jan-Case I’d be surprised if they didn’t aim for a 10y/o age statement when the time comes, although, if they do it soon, it’ll be very limited release. Their warehouses when they first started were more like sheds, so I can’t imagine they’ll have a lot to release. I also expect any age statement would be at least 46%. I might be wrong, but I don’t think they’ve released anything less than 46% so far (at least any major releases).
I’m jumping into the boat. So far the special releases easily were the best. Never had one of the Kylver releases though. About 3 more years for the first ten year. Hopefully they gonna release an age statement of that at at least 46 better even 48%.
@cascode I completely agree. I have a real soft spot for them, too - not least because I worked a couple of miles away from them for several years and occasionally met up with some of the distillery guys for a couple of drams at a local pub! The oldest spirit they have is only 7y/o and there’s hardly any stock of the early stuff, so I suspect we might be waiting a good while yet!
I have a soft spot for Wolfburn but I'm eagerly awaiting the day they bring out something with some solid age.
