This was brought over by a friend who has been collecting the Pinhook series. Bottle 24/206 clocking in at 114 proof. Second in their series of what I believe are all MGP sourced barrels on their way from 4 to 9 years. This was the 5 year stop.
Nose of play dough? Corn sweetness. Faint spice. Rye bread. Altogether a soft nose, nothing that screams out.
Medium body with a slow building warmth, dill spice and a medium finish. Meh. I’d drink this over Buffalo Trace. Both are round and soft, grain forward. Compared to my 5y smooth ambler pick that prickles the mouth this was a but muted. He prefers the Pinhook, I’ll still take the SAOS as I love the kick and more robust spice. Different strokes for different folks.

@pkingmartin I’ve drive past and the smell is lovely. Looks like a gray, cobblestone castle wrapped in vines and moss almost sinking into the ground. The drive is lovely and I need to actually go in one of these days. Their restoration rye(s) didn’t do it for me but I’ve liked their gin(s). I hope to tap into my friends pink wax barrel proof (34m and 114 makes me wary of cloying grain-based sweetness though) and see how they come along.
@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington ah good to know. Have you been to K&C or tried anything from them?
@pkingmartin also makes me wonder if the 5y SAOS we competed this to was MGP’s 21% rye? I’ll have to do some homework...
@pkingmartin this is actually from when they were still sourcing from MGP - my guess is their 35% rye bill or thereabouts. Their newer K&C releases are in the 36-48mo range I believe.
This is from Castle and Key right? I hope their other products are better as their distillery looks amazing.
