Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico

Second mezcal in a Del Maguey tasting.
Nose: ashy, clay, new make, farmyard
Taste: peppery, more spicy than the Vida, oily and sharp.
No better than the Vida and I’m not on an upward trajectory in this tasting it appears.

@PBMichiganWolverine yes, I’m not likely to switch lanes from whiskey to mezcal. No harm in trying though 😉
@cascode that’s interesting, maybe a couple of tastes occasionally is the way I may go too with mezcal. Like you I appreciate the family-run, hand-crafted production.
@cascode Yeah i agree. I really enjoyed the samples i had and rated them as excellent but after a fair number of them there was something that made me not want to drink a whole lot more and definitely not a bottles worth. Maybe the tequila like taste flavours (generally not a fan).
@1901 Like Cornmuse said it's fascinating how we find the same tasting notes in these mezcals you've reviewed recently but have different reactions. I'm sort of half way between love and hate with mezcal, myself. I fell for it hugely when I had it for the first time but quickly discovered that a couple of tastes of each expression were all that I wanted. It's a spirit that I find enormously interesting when a glass is in front of me, most likely because it is so weirdly outside my usual comfort zone, but I have zero impulse to actually pour a glass. Most of the half-dozen bottles of mezcal I bought a few years ago ended up being gifted to other people who enjoyed it more. I can still appreciate the craft and skill, and I get when it is at its best, but as for enjoying it ... meh.
@1901 mezcal just ain’t your thing. All good. Better you found out through a tasting than buying a full bottle.
@Cornmuse yes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison and all that. i see from your reviews we were both exploring mezcal for the first time. Glad to see you enjoyed it and it looks like it could be the start of a journey. I doubt I’ll be keeping you company 🙂
I'm reading through the rest of your mezcal reviews and its almost shocking how we can taste similar things and have completely opposite reactions. Mezcal is the most polarizing drink I've had. Its most definitely a love or hate binary choice.
