I've heard some really good things about the Prospero brand, but I haven't seen much of it around. For short money, this seemed like a no-brainer to try.
N: Some light agave on sort of the papery, musty side. Also some alcohol. This doesn't smell like it is going to be a brash tequila. That isn't good or bad, but the alcohol smell is concerning. I get a little bit of sweet fruit and maybe a dash of brine, but that's about it.
P: Spicy with some bitterness, tartness, brine, and sweetness. It's like it wants to have a grapefruit flavor, but it turns into alcohol bitterness a bit too readily. Really, it's more like there's a really bitter brine here. I'm having trouble placing the spicy flavor, but it's a bit numbing eventually. It initially seems a bit harsh, but I don't feel it on the middle of my tongue too much. I get some agave with the sweetness, but it is disappointingly not that rich. There's a dash of guava to the sweetness as well. This is more complex than I initially thought, but it still isn't very complex.
The brine here is incredibly minimal though. Partida has more and it's a pretty mild tequila. In comparison, this has more bitterness and guava.
F: Kind of bitter with some watery but still sweet guava remaining. Peppery prickles linger as well. As for brine, maybe a tad, but not much. This is still far from being an aggressive, challenging tequila.
- Conclusion -
This has a fairly similar profile to Partida, though I'd say that Partida comes across as more refined. This isn't bad by any means, but it's far from the amazing.
I'm going to land in the 14 to 15 range here. Considering how consistently I'm concluding that Partida Blanco (15) is the better spirit, I think I need to go with a 14 for this. I could imagine a 13 considering the amount of alcohol I'm tasting here, but I'm going to start with a 14.
Despite the alcohol flavor I enjoy drinking this well enough. For the price, I would definitely get Cabeza instead if I could find it though. Actually, this is kind of like Cabeza mixed with Partida, but it's not as good as either and with more harshness and alcohol. Hmm, with more comparison, I'm concluding that a 15 is definitely too high. This is now in the 11 to 14 range. I'm going with a 13 to start. For real, this time.
