Balcones Texas Rye 100 Proof
Rye — Texas, USA

This is a wonderfully satisfying rye separating itself from the sea of mgp 95 and barely legal. Poured neat nose is Christmas tree, dark chocolate, brown sugar, baking spice and zesty wood leaping out of the glass. Its strong and deep but without overbearing ethanol. Palate is loaded. There's sweet with melted toffee, nougat and cocoa powder. Pinecone, vibrant rye spice and barrel tannins provide the confectionary counter. There is a straw/hay note adding a touch of dryness to the experience. Its very complex changing sip to sip morphing flavors back and forth. Finish is long with lingering malted milk balls, spicy rye, pipe tobacco and toasted oak. This is what pure rye should be offering plenty of sugar and spice. ....83/100

@Ctrexman and now the Pilgrimage, finished in sauternes casks...
@soonershrink ... Im on the hunt for Dusk or Dawn. I guess the muscat is at the distillery so I will need to make a trip for a tour
@soonershrink @Ctrexman i had a pour of that orange muscat, before it even had a name...was just an experiment then. I fell in love with it... @Ctrexman next time you’re in Waco, try it
The orange muscat finish of the Luckenbach sounds especially interesting.
Have you managed to get your hands on the Luckenbach or Dusk/Dawn releases? They keep putting out interesting whiskies I'd like to try.
@PBMichiganWolverine I'll reach for my wallet without a second's hesitation for any Springbank 12 yo, Local Barley, Longrow Red or Hazelburn that appears. Also any new Belgrove or Black Gate (which are the Aussie Springbanks, come to think of it).
@Ctrexman @cascode @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington springbank and Lagavulin are the only two single malts I would buy blindly ( I just can’t b/c of price), but the only other ones I can and would buy blindly would be Balcones, del bac, and McKenzie ( and I can...they’re actually affordable )
This sounds remarkably similar to some contemporary Australian rye whiskies, particularly Archie Rose Hybrid Rye. Must be the zeitgeist.
Game on Texas!
I loved this rye because it was so different ... like liquified chocolate
