Bernheim 7 Year Original Wheat Whiskey
Wheat Whiskey — Kentucky, USA

The nose is sweet with cherries and root beer. The palate adds a sharp spicy grain to a hint of cherry, as if too much nutmeg was added to a homemade pumpkin spice. While the overall profile is sweet, this slight bitterness persists throughout to sort of temper it. Overall, this is a very nice (fairly cheap) whiskey to keep around, if only as an educational comparison to the populous bourba which share its shelf. It also mixes a little *too* well with maraschino liqueur and dark chocolate.
Someday I'll try the few other wheat whiskies that are available, but this is what they will inevitably be compared to, and I doubt that the quality/cost ratio will be anywhere close (*cough* Woodford Reserve...)

@BDanner I think for a wheat whiskey, I would actually prefer it to have fewer grains, just to showcase what makes it unique (similar for rye). I might stop short of keeping "Mellow Corn Whiskey" around for that purpose though...(but admittedly haven't tried it)
Agreed this is a unique quality pour
@Benji-Robert Just to be clear, I meant specifically maraschino liqueur (like Luxardo maraschino). Cherry liqueurs (like Cherry Heering or Luxardo Sangue Morlacco) are tart and will actually ruin it. Those are only meant for Blood and Sands, or a (poor) stand-in for sweet vermouth in a Manhattan. Bourbon chicken with something like that sounds great though...
I’ll agree with the VPM here. Woodford is worth a shot in that despite being a wheat whiskey by definition, it uses all three secondary grains (rye, corn, barley). I especially like Bernheim in the summer. Over a large cube of ice, it gets honey butter sweet in taste and texture. Plus, rare whiskey that actually GAINED an age statement after starting out NAS.
my favorite cooking whiskey by a country mile. makes a killer bourbon chicken and rice. the cherry/chocolate liquers is a good tip, thanks
