Ardbeg Wee Beastie

Single Malt — Islay, Scotland

Reviewed June 10, 2021 (edited May 20, 2023)
3.5
3.5 out of 5 stars
Quick hit review. I went into our local liquor store to try out the Ardbeg Scorch however it appears that COVID is impacting even Ardbeg as the tasting is delayed here until the end of the month. Anyhow i saw this one and got to try a dram. Not bad for a 5 year. Quite punchy tar and salty peat flavours. You can definitely taste the youth on the aftertaste as it's short and simple compared to the initial hit. I couldn't see myself drinking to much of this or buying a bottle as I but definitely wouldn't turn down a dram or two either. Out of the 18 Ardbegs I've tried I'd rate it above the An Oa std release but that's it. So 17th place :-)

@PBMichiganWolverine I did dry Jan then eased back in starting with gin. :-) The days of the big sampling runs and collecting stuff is well and truely over but now and then I'll get offered a taste of sampling or buy a single bottle and go on a bit of a stroll then go down memory lane revisiting the stuff that made an impact first time round. This year from memory I've just had bottles of the 21 yr Glendronach 15 yr Springbank and now just opened a 15 yr Glendronach... vastly slower pace and less variety but enjoying my semi retirement from the whisky world. Way more commenting than reviewing these days!

@dhsilv2 Yeah i just think profile wise just didn't click with me when I tried it but there is always a bit of variability with sampling vs a whole bottle review. I think I'll be trying it with a bunch of Arbegs end of the month so will be interested to see how it matches up 2nd time around!

@WhiskyWitch I really enjoyed and recommended the Lap Select when it was $40. At its current $50? Not so much.

An Oa, and Laphroaig Select for that matter, both sound delicious to me. I guess I'll just need to try them to understand all the hate...

Man An Oa just gets no love, lol. I've always had a soft spot for An Oa...but never a spot on my shelf..
