I've done a complete 180° about Cutty. You see, when you're obstinate, and you only see mixers as Ginger Ale and Cola, you limit your own palate. When I starting realizing soda and lime, and Tonic, it really opened up my sense of taste.
Cutty Sark goes well with Soda, especially with Lime, but excels with Tonic. That 'lemon toddy' flavor Stephanie spoke about marries well with a good quality Indian Tonic, like Fever Tree. Schweppes works well with it, too. I found myself refreshed by the combination, and wondering how I could have been so blind, when I did my earlier review? My only fear now is whether or not La Martiniquaise changed its flavor profile; like I said,a total 180° turn!

I'm with you! A good highball with Topo Chico and an entry level Japanese, Scotch, Irish, or American Whisky is high on my list of Cocktails. And you're 100% right, Tonic is not just for Gin. It goes very well with Tequila and Irish (I mix it with Jameson Cask Strength, a little lime and a splash of orange bitters for an "Irish Spring"). Has to be good quality Tonic, though. None of that crap from the gun in the bar!
I'm all for cheap, overlooked gems that have a specific purpose!
