Nose - fresh peat, rubber, lemon zest, tar, apple, honey, grass, strawberry, vanilla, sweet floral notes, white pepper, moderate ethanol burn.
Taste - sweet peat, tar, honey, sour apple, brine, caramel, lemon pith, grapefruit, rubber, iodine, cinnamon, almond, grass, strawberry, black pepper, bitter herbal notes, moderate alcohol bite, finishing medium short with sweet peat smoke, bitter citrus, and tar flavors.
This is my first Kilchoman, and I have a weird beef with it. Every time I drink this one, I get a headache, even with a very small amount. I’ve never had that experience with any other quality spirit. Who knows, maybe it’s just coincidence. Regardless, I won’t hold that against it with my rating.
This smells and tastes young, but not in a completely negative way. The nose is very bright and fresh with creosote, acrid smoke, apple, and a lemony zing. The palate is effervescent with sweet peat, honey, apple, and more lemon, but it turns bitter here. This leads to a relatively short and forgettable finish.
Overall, this is better than average, but nothing special. Compared to another young Islay, Wee Beastie, I like this one less. It’s young, bright, and disappointingly sour and bitter heading into the finish. Never fear. I’m not giving up on Kilchoman just yet. I’ll be reviewing two more interesting expressions starting tomorrow.

@cascode This is a 2019 batch. MBA 07.10.19. I assume it’s more likely to be coincidence or something specific to me than than a bad batch.
What is the batch date? It will be printed at the heel of the bottle on the back and starts with "MBA". Machir Bay varies in profile and I've rated it from 80-88 in my tasting journal over the years, but I've not had a 2021 batch so interested to know if I should avoid for a while. Never had a headache issue with Kilchoman and I can't imagine Anthony releasing a run from a bad cut.
@bigwhitemike Wholeheartedly agree. I enjoy young peated malts, but this one just slightly misses the mark for me.
Wasn’t taken with this one. Peat + lemon + vanilla. It’s competent but not competitive vs the alternatives and needs a a bit more balance IMO. Would drink but not buy again.
@WhiskyWitch Peated Old Pulteney actually isn’t too far off. This doesn’t quite have that salt lick quality though. As for a bottle, I’d pass on this one. I’m sure there are better Kilchomans out there for the money. Hoping my next few reviews shed some light on that.
I've been wanting to try Kilchoman, just not enough to buy it; I always imagine it to be similar to a peated Old Pulteney (which I don't really like). I get that weird headache with small amounts of absinthe..
