The nose is delightfully spicy with notes of nutmeg and cinnamon. There is an undercurrent of sharp and sweet vanilla (reminiscent of vanilla extract) and just the barest hint of leather.
On the palate the whiskey is rich and indulgent. The drink opens with a hint of cacao that grows into rich spice and smooth sweetness. It carries notes of cinnamon and vanilla with an oily mouthfeel. A drop of water opens the flavor and adds the wood of the cask as well as a peppery bite to the drink.
The whiskey finishes in a smooth and pleasant burn that settles into a warm glow in the chest. Like the embers of a campfire beneath a desert sky. Very late in the aftertaste, a hint of leather comes through.
Absolutely marvelous neat. I prefer the whiskey without a splash of water and would not insult it by mixing. My favorite rye to date.
