First time tasting aged rum ever, or as far as I remember. Just wanted to sip something different. Will still try to do my best but enjoyment would be a bigger part of it
Nose : Lot of molasses and caramel + strong sweetness.. I have read they put a lot of added sugar in the rum. Unsure if true but that could explain how I feel. I also smell a little bit of oak and some vanilla and maybe some baking spices. Minimal hints of ?citrus-y? smell
Mouth : It is a nice thick feeling to it. Are all aged rum are like that ? There are a lot of sweetness in it. I love the strong cacoa, vanilla, prunes/date/raisins. Not feeling the oak at all which is a good change to my bourbon tasting. I also feel a lot of the caramel/toffee feeling. Can still feel quite a lot of the spices too. Nothing really feels overwhelming and everything is distinct. Not overly complex but interesting enough
Finish: Dry moderate finish hint of spices/menthol. Also finding some smoky feeling to it
It is certainly enjoyable for the price. I still need to taste it with cola. I think it will probably hold , but not very much. I think I need to explore more aged rums. I heard good word about Plantation, but I think the Diplomatico seems a step I want to go

Oh do try the Diplomatico! I just did and loved it!
@MunsuLight I’ll defer to others who know much more about rum than I do. I’ve only reviewed 14 of them. That should be changing soon, as I’m planning a big review series in the upcoming weeks to run through as many rums as possible. With my limited experience, Foursquare products have been my favorite, and it’s not even close. For a cheaper version of Foursquare, Doorly’s is really good as well, specifically the 12 year. Some of the others I’ve tried have been alright, but not good enough for me to make a strong recommendation.
@jonwilkinson7309 Thanks for your insight. I'm probably going for Diplomatico next since both FourSquare and Privateer arent available where I live. @Ctrexman Thanks for the suggestions. Probably not available where I live . I know the 15 is though. @ctbeck11 Thank to you too. What is your favorite rum or one I should taste ?
I dont care what they add I love El Dorado. The 15yr is a good step up. Diplomatico is a little thinner with no hogo. Pussers is a cheap high flavor rum imo
El Dorado does indeed add sugar, and I do find that sweetened rums tend to have that "thickness" (although not all - Diplomático is one exception I can think of). I can't think of an unsweetened aged rum that has that same quality, although many are what I would classify as "rich" and "full bodied". And they certainly are still sweet, but not in a syrupy way. Foursquare and Privateer are two of my personal unsweetened favourites.
Good question. I wouldn’t say aged rums are, as a rule, thick. I haven’t tried this one yet, but I know that El Dorado is known for dosing their rums with additives. Definitely sugar, but possibly other colorings and texture enhancers that could contribute to a thicker mouthfeel.
