Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA

Picked this up on vacation in California, since Willett does not distribute to Oklahoma. First impression: much fruitier than I imagined. Loads of cherry syrup, orange, somewhat medicinal. The finish is really nice - brings a burst of spices and the more classic rye notes. Strong like but not love at this point, but I suspect my impression will change some over the course of the bottle.
Update: subsequent tastings have made me appreciate this more. The combination of fruit and spice make this stand out from some of the other ryes I've tried.

@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington @PBMichiganWolverineYeah, I have no idea what marketing genius enabled them to sell such young product for such high prices.
@Ctrexman Oh, is that how it works? I've always been surprised by how little water it takes.
@PBMichiganWolverine I have to agree that the 7y is a bit of robbery. In ways I almost like the 4y better.
@Spirited_Away Look forward to hearing what you think. Seems a little on the expensive side for a 4 year rye, but I'd buy it again at 60 if I could find it.
@soonershrink I've been eyeing a bottle of this at my local for quite some time. I think I'll grab it next time I see it now. sounds good.
@Ctrexman I have tried adding drops of water in the past, but got out of the habit, as more often than not I didn't notice any real difference. That may be due to a beginner's palate, so I need to try again now that I've been tasting whiskey more regularly.
As PK said just a couple actual drops. It will open up almost any whiskey by breaking surface tension and releasing flavorful oils
@pkingmartin Will give it a splash on the next pour. I'm not typically in the habit of adding water unless I find the whiskey too hot, which this isn't despite the 110 proof.
Such a price difference when you go to the 6yr version. For the extra 2 years, they’re really jacking it up
I found that a few drops of water really helped open this one up for me.
