Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year

Rye — Kentucky, USA

Reviewed September 7, 2021 (edited November 18, 2021)
4.5
4.5 out of 5 stars
Willett distillery can trace its roots back to the 1600’s when the Willett family settled in Maryland just outside of What is now Washington DC. After a few generations the family moved to Kentucky and brought the Maryland style whiskey making process with them. From there, the Willett distillery has grown into one of the most famous and historical distilleries in Bardstown, Kentucky, where prominent bourbon production is done. The Whiskey Willett Straight Rye is matured for a minimum of 4 years and is bottle at different proof levels depending on the batch. The whiskey is blended by 2 different mashbills and bottled at cask strength. The bottle is tasted was 111.6 proof/55.8% ABV. Color: Delicate Amber This whiskey is full bodied and complex starting with wonderful rye notes of the nose. It begins with notes of coffee and oakiness, then gives way to sweeter notes of dark chocolate, dark cherry, vanilla, and a slight maple note. On the palate the sweetness intensifies with notes of rich dark chocolate, marshmallow, graham cracker, and caramel. Notes of spearmint, oak tannins, and rye spice arise on the back half that mix well and balance out the sweetness. The finish is long, with notes of intense oakiness, dark chocolate, and some tobacco.

I would say $65 for a 4y rye is steep but those sweet and herbal notes really seem to peak early for Willett and dang do I love their whiskeys
