Nose - Soft maraschino cherry, caramel, fruity leather, crème brulee, red hot cinnamon candy, blueberry and cherry pie filling, and medium ethanol.
Palate - Caramel syrup drizzled over cherry pie, oiled leather, cinnamon candy, cane sugar, and plums. Finish is medium-short with lingering artificial cherry, honey, cinnamon, oak tannins, and medium ethanol bite.
Honestly I wanted to hate this, but it's a good wheated bourbon with a very good nose and shorter than expected finish. But, there's no way in hell I'd pay a markup for this or spend countless hours hunting it down. I got lucky and picked it up locally at MSRP during a club pick release. I'm glad I did because honestly it may be the best thing I've tried so far from Buffalo Trace, which isn't saying much.
Here's the dirty secret that may be my isolated opinion, this tastes really, really similar to Maker's Mark 101 and Cask Strength. Both are readily available for $42 and $50 in NC, the cask strength on sale a quarter of the year for $40. When I opened this bottle, my very first thought was this is that great Maker's 101 I bought last year. I've already gotten in arguments on Facebook with people who religiously hunt and secondary purchase BT products who think I'm an idiot. These same people haven't tried the good Maker's products or half of the big brand bourbons because all they do is look for scarce products listed in clickbait internet articles. Don't be that person, buy Maker's and cover the label with a piece of tape with Weller written in Sharpie.

@PBMichiganWolverine It's still MSRP of $59.95 in NC. More rural counties actually already got limited cases of it weeks ago, but by the time I checked they were out anywhere I stopped. We've had warehouse shipping issues for months here, none of the cities have gotten it yet from what I know.
@Zachary-Robbins @PBMichiganWolverine I too am looking forward to FAE-02. The 01 was quite good. I too still see them on the shelves where I am.
@Zachary-Robbins I’ve not even seen the new FAE yet—-wouldn’t be surprised if they increase prices based on the first one’s success
@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah I have a spare FAE-01 I haven't opened. Was hoping to get the FAE-02 soon to compare, but the distribution so far in NC has been random and scarce.
@pkingmartin I honestly think Maker's 101 is the closest comp, the finished Maker's are much more complex and oaky.
Preach 🙌🏻
Maker’s FAE release earlier this year was amazing, especially considering the price. Couldn’t believe there were dozens available on a shelf, and pretty much every store had it. Looking forward to their version 2 coming out
Haha. Love the sharpie comment. Yeah, bourbon hunting is crazy.
Haha, you sir are no idiot and I have no quarrel with you for dumping on BT products. Great review and I can see the similarities between Weller and Maker’s. I think I actually had the Weller Antique and Maker’s FAE close to each other and preferred the Maker’s. Cheers!
