Single Malt — Japan

Have you ever had a fruity IPA style beer while watching fireworks during the 4th of July? You get this aroma of burnt wood alongside a whiff of berries. This reminded me of that experience, in a good way. The taste is just as good----lots of sweet roasted nuts like hazelnuts and macademias, plenty of peat, mixed in with a good dose of vanilla. I noticed it's not as good with ice. Definitely have this neat, or just a splash of water. This is a really well made whiskey, simply highlighting again the fine craftmanship coming out of Japan. It has no rough edges ( can be a positive or negative...depending on your mood that evening). Simply well made, and well balance.

Slainte: I kind of look at Japanese whiskeys as either now out of our range (Yamazaki Sherry, and 18) or subpar NAS that are for twice the price as the what the aged ones were selling. For an equivalent price, one can do better with Scotland, India, Canada, or US
Such a pity that Nikka abandoned all Single Malts with an age statement and went entirely for NAS expressions... You wouldn't believe it: When I visited Yoichi in July and asked for Yoichi 15 in a nosing glass, the personal just laughed at me. Nosing glass? Tumbler or shot glass! Seriously, Japanese make some cracking good whiskies, but the way to consume them is just... odd.
