Nose - cherry, earthy mint, anise, clove, caramel, dry vanilla, coffee, apple skin, hay, rye spice, cola, cocoa, orange blossom, powdered sugar, mild to moderate ethanol burn.
Taste - spearmint, anise, bitter herbal notes, lemon pith, baking chocolate, caramel, tannic oak, coffee, black tea, sour apple, clove, dry vanilla, black pepper, cough syrup, apple skin, moderate alcohol bite, finishing medium length with mint, anise, and dark chocolate flavors.
The eighth of nine blind tastings opens with minty, herbal aromas, accompanied by cherry cola and dry rye spices. The palate arrives strongly bitter and slightly sour. There’s very little sweetness. Instead bitter, unsweetened chocolate, apple skin tannins, and mint are the dominant qualities I’m tasting. The mouthfeel is slightly thin and the finish is notably drying.
If I had to guess, I’d say this is mature, underproofed rye. The oak is strong and, in my experience, those deeply herbal, black tea notes usually accompany age. This isn’t my favorite whiskey profile. It’s austere and leans slightly too far into bitter, herbal, and sour territory. Overall, it’s better than average for me. So what am I drinking tonight? Woodford Reserve Chocolate Malted Rye Bourbon. Well, I’m not surprised I picked up on all those chocolate notes. I just wish it were more well balanced. Many thanks to @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington for the generous sample!

@pkingmartin Ha! I can see that. Definitely has that drying, malty chocolate powdery thing going on.
@ctbeck11 They should just relabel it as Cocoa puff cereal rye. I wasn’t crazy about this one but I love that kids breakfast cereal cocoa finish.
@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington @ContemplativeFox Thanks! I could see being more disappointing if I had chocolate expectations coming into this one. It gives you the chocolate, but not in a rich, decadent way I imagine most who purchase this would be seeking.
@Benji-Robert Interesting. First I’m hearing of it. Wonder how it would compare to Signet.
This one baffled me. I couldn't decide whether it was funky, mature, and interesting, or whether it was just wrong. You did a great job identifying the characteristics here.
I poured this for several friends tonight and didn't win anyone over. The coco that came around with the finish was notable, but didn't save the flat initial impression. I recall enjoying this because I knew what I was getting into but suspect anyone hoping for rich, sweet chocolate notes and wood were met with an unpleasant surprise. Superb notes as always and glad you got more out of it than my buddies this evening.
I really wanna try the Macallan "CACAO MALT" or whatever it is they just announced but the $140msrp... urgh... excellent nose notes
